Friday Happy: The Good The Bad The Weird comes to DVD Aug 17, 2010

Photobucket

I literally leapt out of my chair with a squeal of joy earlier this week when I ran across this earlier this week:

The Good The Bad The Weird hits DVD on August 17, 2010!

I have been over the moon excited to see this film for OVER 2 YEARS now! The first time I wrote about it was back in June 2008 when the fantastic trailer first appeared online showing us a freaking stylish, funny South Korean western full on with guns, horses and trains. I watched the trailer a record amount of times, probably the most times of any film every (with the Mirageman trailer as a close second).

The Good The Bad The Weird was in Toronto as a Gala Presentation during the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival, but regular TIFF goers will remember that years as the one was the year of the premium tickets kerfuffle and therefore wasn't available on regular passes and was $40 (twice as much as regular tickets). And I was like "I"m not paying that! That's unfair!" Oh, boy - I regretted it. I had no idea it would take over 2 years before I would have the opportunity to see the film. But here it is! As of August 17, 2010 the Kim Jee-woon film starring Woo-Sung Jung, Byung-hun Lee and Kang-ho Song will be available on DVD in just a few short weeks.

I for one, can't wait. But I will. Less than a month isn't that long after waiting 2 years and it makes me so happy. That's why I'm sharing this on Friday as my sister Jamie hosts the The Next Chapter: The Happy Book, a book blogging group and they are sharing their happy every Friday, and you can too over at the site right here. What made you happy this week? It's fun to share our happys!

I usually don't embed trailers, but this one is really my favourite trailer ever so I'm breaking the rules. It's not the highest quality visually but it's the 'right' one.

Film Fan Fridays for Friday July 23, 2010

Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!

Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday July 23, 2010! Oh, now that is a particularly awesome day for a Friday! Not that every Friday isn't awesome, but I like this one the best... because this one is my birthday! WOOHOO! I love it when my birthday is a Friday! New movies and birthday goodness - the more celebrations the better! Ye-haw :)

In limited release this week we have just one release, and that is the highly acclaimed documentary Gasland which played at this years Hot Docs and I've only heard good things about.

In wide release this week we have 3 films to choose from. Fans of action & Angelina Jolie can rejoice as today's big release has both in Salt. I'm actually quite looking forward to that one (although I think I figured it out - saw the trailer too many times, le sigh..). Also out in wide release is Ramona and Beezus, based on the kids book Ramona Forever from the Ramona series by author Beverly Cleary, and I have to say it looks pretty cute. Last release of the week is Bollywood comedy Khatta Meetha.

If you are a fan of Japanese film, be sure to check out the Shinsedai Cinema Festival that runs through to July 25. See my preview of the festival and reviews of films at the festival.

Have a great weekend!

Reverend's Reviews: Dream On

We all dream. Men and women do, children do, even animals do. It has even been said that we would die if we didn't dream, our brains so overloaded with unprocessed thoughts and experiences that they would take a detrimental, physical toll.

As my colleague here at Movie Dearest, Neil Cohen, has already pointed out in his recent review of Christopher Nolan's new sci-fi mind-bender Inception, previous movies have introduced and played with the concept of entering the dreams of others. None of them, though, has depicted the human dreamscape as effectively and provocatively as Nolan.

Nolan needs little introduction as the methodical writer-director of such intelligent and entertaining contemporary classics as Memento and The Dark Knight. With Inception, he has crafted the best, most believable entry to date in an inherently imaginative genre. From the film's opening sequence — in which the action careens wildly from a third-world village under siege to a lavish party thrown by a Japanese tycoon (played by Ken Watanabe) — to its haunting final shot, Inception holds and rewards the attention of alert viewers.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Dom (short for Dominick) Cobb, the leader of a crack team of "extractors" who are paid well by rival business and political leaders to drug the competition and steal their best, subconsciously inspired ideas. Watanabe's character, however, charges the group with the never-before-tried task of implanting an idea in the mind of his chief competitor's son and heir. This process is referred to as "inception."

From there, Nolan's seamless script twists and turns as it introduces other characters (including Cobb's father, played by Michael Caine, and an architectural student winningly portrayed by Juno's Ellen Page), explores multiple levels of consciousness, and uses impressive visual effects to literally turn reality in on itself. While I would love to read what a psychologist or dream analyst makes of Inception, it perfectly reflected my experience of the surreal figures and action that normally occur in recognizable settings within my dreams.

Of course, one is led to wonder throughout Inception exactly which characters' dreams are being played out, or if the whole movie might be a dream. This brain-teasing on the part of Nolan and his excellent cast (which also boasts great turns by Joseph-Gordon Levitt, Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard and the long-MIA Tom Berenger) never feels manipulative, gratefully. Rather, it feels natural, even organic given the subject matter. I detected enjoyably intentional nods to James Bond adventures, especially during the team's invasion of a snow-covered fortress in the mountains. Composer Hans Zimmer often seems to be knowingly channeling Bond score stalwart, John Barry.

Inception also reminded me in spots of the very effective, Martin Scorsese-directed thriller Shutter Island released earlier this year, and not just because DiCaprio stars in both films. Both play with their characters' and audiences' perceptions of reality and sanity, as well as the mental toll that loss and grief can take. Shutter Island also benefited from a game, top-notch cast and crew.

Many critics are passionately, even vociferously, divided over Inception. It's been a while, though, since the critical community has had a large-scale debate over a movie. I think this isn't only a testament to Inception's high profile but to Nolan's complex, visionary achievement. See it, and feel free to weigh in here with your own reactions. Like dreams, movies can linger and haunt long after they're over.

Reverend's Rating: A

UPDATE: Inception is now available on DVD and Blu-ray from Amazon.com.

Wolfathon in Completathon Vlog

It's vlogging madness this week! It's been a bit since the Wolfathon came to completion, which means it's time to look back and go through all of the films I've seen for the marathon from the ones I loved, to ones I didn't love so much. From discussed themes, effects, what I learned about werewolf films & myself along the way and of course my favourites werewolf films.

You can see all the werewolf films I've reviewed for the wolfathon and beyond here.
I also mentioned the Vampathon, the vampire film marathon I did last year.
