Writer/Dir: Mark Neveldine & Brian Taylor - directorial debuts
Cast: Jason Statham, Amy Smart, Dwight Yoakam
USA, 2006
Seen: September 20. 2006 at Paramount
Reason to see: Looked like a fun action flick, and I'm a Jason Statham fan
I preface this review with 2 things. 1 - I really do try to see the good in all things. 2 - I saw this hot on the heels of TIFF for 2006 which may have placed it at a little bit of a disadvantange. I don't think so but I think its only fair to mention it.
This film as zero redeeming qualities. I almost left the theatre at one point (scenes with his girlfriend), and in fact I wish I had. From numerous racial/racist comments (including pointing to an 'ethnic' cab driver and shouting something about them to a crowd which beats him up) to sexist attitudes to general all around meanness. The main character is a jerk from start to finish, selfish, rude and with no consideration for anyone/thing other than himself. I really wish there was something good to say and if I didn't have on my 101 that I would write about all the films I would see I wouldn't have even bothered to review it.
Shannon's Overall View:
I hated it
I will never watch it again
I don't recommend it to anyone, not even those that would enjoy it as I believe it would re-enforce things I think are awful (racism, sexism, violence, meanness)
This film goes under my list of "Non-Reviews"
