Movie Dearest in the Headlines: Second Edition

That's right; your favorite blog is in the news once again. I was recently interviewed by Chris Carpenter for the Long Beach Gay Blade, and the article is now available online. Here is an excerpt:

"Like any other young gay person coming of age in the ’70s and ’80s, I craved seeing gay people on screen, even if they weren’t necessarily positive portrayals, like on the television series Soap and Dynasty. I remember watching Making Love on television when I was younger, hoping nobody would catch me. By my late teens/early 20s, it was around the dawn of new “queer cinema.” My friends and I just ate up such groundbreaking movies as Parting Glances, Maurice and My Beautiful Laundrette.

Probably the most influential gay film for me is The Celluloid Closet. It opened up so many possibilities, especially since I already was a classic movie buff. The documentary put into perspective the little things I had noticed while watching older films — when I thought, “Well, I’m gay. So I’m probably just reading too much into it.” But then along comes The Celluloid Closet and I realized, “OK, I’m not imagining this; it isn’t just me.”
