Reel Thoughts Interview: Diva Alert

Actress Drew Barrymore has received a lot of acclaim for her performance as Little Edie Beale in HBO’s Grey Gardens, but Christine Ebersole was there first. When the show was on the stage, she played a dual role — Little Edie and her mother, Edith Bouvier Beale. Ebersole’s performance arguably made Barrymore’s role possible.

The blond funny woman is also a sublime singer, and will demonstrate both talents at shows in Scottsdale and Tucson this weekend.

“It’s songs from the American Songbook,” she said during a telephone interview from New York, where she did the show at the Carlisle Hotel. “Although there are two songs by Noël Coward, because I just finished a Noël Coward album,” inspired by her performance in his Blithe Spirit on Broadway last year, she said.

“The show is mostly personal stories about my family and my children and my mother, and songs that relate to the stories,” Ebersole said.

She said that she’s passionate about her music and that playing the dual role in Grey Gardens was “like climbing Mount Everest and putting the flag in the summit. It can’t get much better than that. I felt blessed to be part of such a great work of art.” She won the Tony Award for Grey Gardens in 2007 and another in 2001 for her work in 42nd Street.

Ebersole said she isn’t eager to return to Broadway, however, since the eight-shows-a-week grind takes her away from her three teenage children.

Her 1981-82 stint at Saturday Night Live was another kind of challenge. “That was a pretty intense experience. I’d just come off the road playing Guinevere in Camelot opposite Richard Burton and Richard Harris. I mean, it was like going from Earth to Mars. Here it was a 90-minute show that you were putting on live and you had six days to do it. I can’t say I had a lot of confidence, because I didn’t come from the stand-up world. It was definitely a life-changing experience.”

Ebersole has links to the Human Rights Campaign from her website, and she’s opposed to Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and supports GLBT marriage rights.

She also supported Ron Paul in the last election, which brought negative feedback from some of her gay fans. She said that Paul, Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel were the only candidates on record as opposing DADT.

She recommended the film Coming Out Under Fire. “I don’t know that we can trust the government (to overturn DADT). I think it comes down to complicity. Once people stop complying with rules and laws that are unjust, (the laws) won’t be able to stand,” Ebersole said.

“Now the leaders are saying that they need another year to review it. I don’t know whether to laugh or to cry about that. God created us in his image, which is meant to be free. He didn’t create some people better than others. We were all created from the same clump of dirt, so for this racism and sexism and classism to occur, it has to be complied with; these people only have power when you give it to them.”

An Evening with Christine Ebersole will be presented this evening at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts.  Ebersole will also appear tomorrow night at Tucson's Centennial Hall at the University of Arizona in The Music of Broadway with Cheyenne Jackson and Marin Mazzie.

Awards Watch: The 1st Annual Dorian Awards!

Recently, I and my fellow Movie Dearest Men on Film Chris Carpenter and Neil Cohen were pleased to be invited to join the Gay & Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association.  The newly formed group wasted no time in giving out its own annual kudos, christened the Dorian Awards, to the best in GLBT-themed film and television.

A Single Man was named both Film of the Year and GLBT-Themed Film of the Year, as well as star Colin Firth for Film Performance.  Glee also won three Dorians, for both TV Musical or Comedy and Campy TV Show of the Year, plus Jane Lynch for TV Musical or Comedy Performance.  On the drama side, Grey Gardens won for TV Drama and TV Drama Performance of the Year for Drew Barrymore.

Other winners include Precious' Gabourey Sidibe for the More Please! Breakout Award, Prayers for Bobby for GLBT-Themed TV Show and Beyoncé's Obsessed for Campy Film of the Year.  And, taking a cue from its namesake Dorian Gray, the Dorian "Forever Ageless" Awards were given to the film classic All About Eve and gay fave actress Cloris Leachman.

For a full list of all the Dorian Award winners and nominees, see the comments section below.

Awards Watch: Golden Globe Winners 2009

Oh, those wacky folks at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association sure proved their populist nature with tonight's Golden Globe Awards. Winners included such box office hits as Avatar, The Blind Side, Sherlock Holmes and, most surprising of all, The Hangover.  Meanwhile, such critical darlings as The Hurt Locker and Up in the Air were left with little to no recoginition, a fact that will surely cloud Oscar predictions for the rest of the season.

See the comments section below for a quick look at all the winners.

Dearie Awards 2009: Television Show of the Year - GLEE

The title of Glee is most fitting, for that is exactly what we are filled with each time we watch it. Creator Ryan Murphy's musical dramedy — think Election meets High School Musical by way of American Idol — defied all the odds to become a pop culture sensation in 2009. And, if the continuing string of hit iTunes singles, four Golden Globe nominations (more than any other TV program this year) and a growing fan base of dearly devoted "Gleeks" everywhere are any indication, it is only just beginning.

Glee's deft mixture of relentless optimism and biting cynicism helped it overcome any false notes along the way (most infamously: that credibility-straining fake pregnancy storyline). It has also made instant stars of its multi-talented, Screen Actors Guild nominated cast, including Broadway faves Matthew Morrison and Lea Michele, break out hunks Cory Monteith and Mark Salling, newbie Chris Colfer, and ace scene stealer Jane Lynch. To borrow the title of its most famous song: don't stop believing in Glee!

Honorable Mentions:
Forget all those wimpy Twilight vamps with their sparkly skins; for a real blood suckin' good time, true vampire fans tuned in to True Blood, Alan Ball's sexy and smart American gothic. And the year's best made for television movie was the Emmy Award winning, dramatized remake of the cult classic documentary Grey Gardens, starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore as our beloved Beales.

Awards Watch: SAG Nominations 2009

Nominations for the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were revealed this morning and, just as they always do at this point in award season, things are starting to look awfully familiar. All the usual suspects (Bridges, Clooney, Streep, Mo’Nique) make their usual appearances, with the only real surprise being a supporting nod for Inglourious Basterds' resident femme fatale Diane Kruger.

Her film joins An Education, The Hurt Locker, Nine and Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire in the Ensemble Cast category, leaving no room for front-runner Up in the Air, which should give Oscar bloggers plenty to obsess about over the holiday lull. (For a quick look at all the film nominees, see the comments section below.)

As for the TV nominations, cast honors went to Glee, Modern Family and True Blood, while both Big and Little Edie (Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore) were recognized for HBO's Grey Gardens. They'll compete against Sigourney Weaver from Prayers for Bobby.

The SAG Awards will be simulcast live on TNT and TBS on January 23. In addition to the annual awards, the Guild will present their Life Achievement Award to our beloved Betty White.

Awards Watch: Golden Globe Nominations 2009

Nominations for the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards were announced by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association this morning, with Up in the Air leading the way with six nods. In addition to Best Picture - Drama, writer/director Jason Reitman and stars George Clooney, Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick were also recognized.

Joining Up in the Air in the drama race is Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds and Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, while (500) Days of Summer, The Hangover, It's Complicated, Julie & Julia and Nine compete for the Best Picture - Musical or Comedy prize. (See the comments section below for a quick look at all the film nominations.)

Several actors found themselves nominated twice, including Meryl Streep in the same category (Best Actress - Musical or Comedy for It's Complicated and Julie & Julia). Other double nominees include Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side and The Proposal), Matt Damon (The Informant! and Invictus) and Anna Paquin (True Blood and the TV movie The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler). As previously announced, Martin Scorsese will be honored with the HFPA's Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement.

On the television side, Glee was tops with four nominations. In addition to a nod for Best TV Series - Musical or Comedy, cast members Matthew Morrison, Lea Michele and Jane Lynch were singled out as well. Other Movie Dearest TV faves that are up for Globes include Lost, Modern Family and the TV movies Grey Gardens and Prayers for Bobby.

In other TV award news, the Writers Guild of America has also revealed their television nominations, with more nods going to Glee, Grey Gardens, Lost, Modern Family and True Blood, plus One Life to Live and Pedro by Dustin Lance Black. Winners will be announced February 20.

The Golden Globes will be broadcast live on NBC January 17 in a ceremony hosted by Ricky Gervais. And be sure to check back with us this Saturday for the start of our annual Golden Globe-themed MD Polls.

Awards Watch: Coast to Coast

The 2009 movie awards season kicked into high gear the past two days with the announcements from four major kudos groups of the results of their annual cinematic honors.

In a rare instance of solidarity, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the New York Film Critics Circle both chose Kathryn Bigelow's gritty war drama The Hurt Locker for Best Picture and Best Director.

They also agreed on the supporting acting races, bestowing honors on Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) and Mo'Nique (Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire). In the lead categories, LA went for Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart) and Yolande Moreau (Séraphine), while their Gotham counterparts chose George Clooney (for both Up in the Air and his vocal turn in Fantastic Mr. Fox) and Meryl Streep (for Julie & Julia but not It's Complicated).

The Hurt Locker also placed strongly in the nominations for the Broadcast Film Critics Association's Critics' Choice Awards with eight nods. But it was Inglourious Basterds and Nine that lead the pack with ten nominations apiece. Joining these three in the Best Picture race is Avatar, An Education, Invictus, Precious, A Serious Man, Up and Up in the Air. Winners will be announced on January 15 in a live ceremony scheduled to be broadcast on VH1 with Kristin Chenoweth hosting.

Meanwhile, the American Film Institute has revealed their own top ten for '09. The AFI Awards for film go to Coraline, The Hangover, The Hurt Locker, The Messenger, Precious, A Serious Man, A Single Man, Sugar, Up and Up in the Air. On the TV side, such Movie Dearest faves as The Big Bang Theory, Glee, Modern Family and True Blood were recognized. Click here for a special video tribute to all the AFI Award winners.

For a quick look at all the winners/nominees, see the comments section below. And the gold derby will continue to race on later this week with the nominations for the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.

Awards Watch: Emmys 2009

The festivities began with a promising start on last night's Emmy Awards when a tearful but still adorable Kristin Chenoweth picked up the much-deserved honor as Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her daffy portrayal of the lovesick Olive Snook on the late, lamented Pushing Daisies. But the Emmy gods giveth, and they taketh away, for the male equivalent of that award was bestowed upon, not How I Met Your Mother's Neil Patrick Harris as expected but ... Two and Half Men's Jon Cryer?

However, Harris got the last laugh (and then some) as he hosted the entire evening with charm and class, a smooth old school emcee in the tradition of Johnny Carson. His backgrounds in theater and magic were on full display as he razzle dazzled the crowd with a clever opening number (penned by Hairspray's Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman) and even managed to throw in a Dr. Horrible skit.

Meanwhile, HBO's Grey Gardens picked up three more trophies, including wins for Best TV Movie, Best Actress for Jessica Lange and Best Supporting Actor for Ken Howard. Other Movie Dearest faves among the winners: Glenn Close, Toni Collette, Cherry Jones and Lost's MVP (Most Villainous Player) Michael Emerson.

The Latest on TV: East Hampton Story

From the cult classic documentary to the Tony Award-winning stage musical to (now) a feature-length dramatic TV movie, the bizarre saga of the Beales of Grey Gardens continues its unlikely path through pop culture with the latter's debut on HBO tomorrow night.

Starring Jessica Lange as "Big Edie" and Drew Barrymore as "Little Edie", this new Grey Gardens recreates the acclaimed Maysles brothers' doc, fleshed out (à la the Broadway version) with flashbacks to the estate's pre-squalor days. Jeanne Tripplehorn co-stars (as Jackie O), along with Daniel Baldwin, Malcolm Gets and Ken Howard. Click here to watch the trailer.

The Latest on TV: Return to Grey Gardens

Albert Maysles returns to familiar territory with Grey Gardens: From East Hampton to Broadway, a new documentary that will begin airing tomorrow night on PBS' Independent Lens (check local listings for exact dates and showtimes in your area).

As the title suggest, the hour-long program "unfolds the creative journey" that turned the cult classic Grey Gardens from non-fiction film to Tony Award-winning Broadway musical. In addition to a look behind-the-scenes and performance footage, the doc includes interviews with the creators and cast (such as the original stage Little Edie, Christine Ebersole) and even an interview with Maysles himself.

Monkey With Broadway

It's hard to believe that 25 years have passed since Gerard Alessandrini first started skewering the sacred cows of the Great White Way with Forbidden Broadway. But here it is, a quarter of a century later, and of course there is still plenty to lampoon.

The latest production, subtitled Rude Awakening, takes aim at such current theatrical fare as Grey Gardens, Hairspray, Mary Poppins, Wicked and even the just-opened The Little Mermaid (I can just see it: Ariel duct taped to a skateboard).

And now even those of us outside of New York can get a taste of this Forbidden fruit, with the newest original cast recording coming out January 22, now available for pre-orderfrom Amazon.com. As it is not yet listed there, see the comments section below for the full track list, including six bonus tracks.

The Gay White Way

Michael Portantiere over at AfterElton.com recently looked back at "the year in gay theater" in the Big Apple, finding much to celebrate.

The "Gayest Show of the Year"? Xanadu, silly. And of course, our guy Cheyenne Jackson is singled out, as well as Tony Award-winner David Hyde Pierce, Edward Albee, Charles Busch and Ian McKellen (for "best nude scene"!). Other notable Broadway and Off Broadway productions mentioned include The Ritz (which closes this Sunday, by the by), Grey Gardens, Tea and Sympathy and Die Mommie Die!, with special mention given to Jerry Mitchell's annual bacchanal for charity, Broadway Bares.

And if this picture of Cheyenne isn't enough for you (how could it not?), he also appeared at the recent Broadway's Back! special performance, along with none other then Angela Lansbury, Bernadette Peters and a host of Broadway's current best.

Awards Watch: The Grammys

The Grammy Awards are more then just Justin; four categories honor music composed for other mediums, including the movies and the theater. This year's nominees (announced today) are a mixture of film and stage productions from this year and last, due to the Grammys' eligibility period from October 2006 to September 2007. Thus, most of the scores and songs listed here were in last year's award races, although a few newbies did get recognized.

Gustavo Santaolalla won the Academy Award last year for his Babelscore, and is nominated here for Best Score Soundtrack Album, along with fellow Oscar nominee Pan's Labyrinthby Javier Navarrete. Other 2006 scores in the mix are James Newton Howard's Blood Diamond,Howard Shore's The Departedand John Powell's Happy Feet. The lone 2007 nominee is Ratatouilleby Michael Giacchino.

Happy Feet is also recognized for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture with Prince's Golden Globe winner, "The Song of The Heart", as well as Chris Cornell's James Bond theme "You Know My Name" from Casino Royaleand the Oscar-nominated, Jennifer Hudson sung Dreamgirlstune, "Love You I Do". The remaining two songs are contenders in this year's Oscar derby, "Falling Slowly" from Onceand Eddie Vedder's "Guaranteed" from Into the Wild.

The Beatles factor into two of the Best Compilation Soundtrack Album nominees with both Across the Universeand, oddly, Love, the Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil show (which really should be in the next category, but hey, remember this is the Grammys). Hairsprayjoins Dreamgirls and Once to round out the category.

And finally, the Best Musical Show Album category includes last year's Tony Award-winner for score, Spring Awakening, competing with fellow Tony nominee Grey Gardens. Rounding out the category are three old favorites revisited: A Chorus Line,Companyand West Side Story: 50th Anniversary Recording.

The Grammy Awards will be presented February 20 during a live telecast on CBS.

Casting About: Julia, Jackie and Hitch

Three very different cultural icons will be played by four very different actors in upcoming film projects.

First up is a first: a movie based on a blog ... sort of. Columbia is adapting for the screen the book Julia and Julie: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen, Julie Powell's memoir about her yearlong attempt to cook all the recipes in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Powell wrote all about it on her foodie blog first, and then put it all in the book, which the movie is technically based on, but hey, I can always dream about Movie Dearest: The Movie, can't I? And who better to play MD ... I mean, Child then mistress of the movie accent, Miss Meryl Streep. The film, whose title will be shortened to just Julia and Julie, will co-star the Enchanted Amy Adams as the author, with Nora Ephron directing.

Next up, Jeanne Tripplehorn will portray Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in the now-filming Grey Gardens remake. As every fan of the documentary knows, Jackie came to the Edie Beales' aide when the bad ol' health department threatened to raid the dilapidated titular estate then inhabited by her aunt and cousin, along with dozens of cats and raccoons. Jackie herself did not appear in the original film, but this further proves my theory that the new film fleshes out the story just a tad.

And it appears the movie's master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, is the subject of two in-the-works projects. First up is Alfred Hitchcock Presents. No, not a big screen version of the classic television anthology series, the film will instead take a look at the troubled making of Psycho, and none other then Anthony Hopkins will portray the Hitchster (and he already has the voice of his fellow Englishman down pat). Running With Scissors helmer Ryan Murphy will direct, with another Oscar-winning favorite, Helen Mirren, expected to play Mrs. Hitchcock.

The other Hitchcock movie will also focus on the filming of one his pictures, Number 13. Never saw it? Well, nobody has, as it was never completed. What was supposed to have been his directorial debut has been mired in mystery for decades, but this new film, also titled Number 13, seeks to shade a little light on it ... and get a few laughs. Its Hitch, Dan Fogler (of Balls of Fury fame), describes it as a sort of Hitchcock in Love, tweaking the facts (what little there are in this case) in the same manner as that Shakespeare flick. Ewan McGregor, Ben Kinsley and Emily Mortimer will also star.

UPDATE: Stanley Tucci, Meryl Streep's The Devil Wears Prada co-star, will play her husband in Julie and Julia.

First Look: Drew as Little Edie

As all the Dark Knight and Sex and the City snaps flooding the internet prove, it's hard to grasp exactly what is going on in unofficial onset photos like this one, our first glimpse at Drew Barrymore taking on the iconic role of Little Edie Beale in the upcoming Grey Gardens remake.

With all that hair, I assume this is from a possible "early days" portion of the new feature, before the events seen in the Maysles' documentary(like in the stage musical version). But if that is a turban in her hands and not -- a swim cap? -- then maybe it is a scene from that timeframe, although surely her hair would need to be pinned up to fit in that thing. Again, hard to tell at this point ...

The new film, which still hasn't been confirmed as a feature or HBO TV movie, is currently shooting on location in Toronto.
