Worldwide Short Film Festival 2010 Day 4 - Friday June 4, 2010

Photobucket

Day 4 at the Worldwide Short Film Festival the sun came out to play again, as did short film fans. I caught one program on Day 4 - Official Selection 11: Not Just From Venus, and it was a screening with an enthusiastic audience and lots of filmmakers in attendance which is always such a treat. Let's have a look at a selection of the shorts.

Official Selection 11: Not Just From Venus

Slip
Dir: Chelsea McMullan
Cast: Linnea Swan
Canada, 6 minutes

Gorgeous and kinetic 1-shot movement piece set in the Harrison baths here in Toronto. Absolutely fascinating perspective and play between the camera and subjects, this short film was a total treat.

Gayby
Dir: Jonathan Lisecki
Cast: Jenn Harris, Matthew Wilkas
USA, 12 minutes

Hilarious comedic short centred on friends thinking about having a baby together. Fantastic dialogue & performances, and beautifully captured awkwardness made this short a very enjoyable watch.

Chloe and Attie
Dir: Scooter Corkle
Cast: Joyce Robbins, Jacqueline Robbins
Canada, 8 minutes

Chloe and Attie achieved an amazing feat of creating an energy in the film that was equal parts caring and creepy. I don't think I've ever seen that before. Unusual premise that ironically really is a what-you-see-is-what-you-get scenario, as unbelievable as it may see. Very unique and successful storytelling.

Homeland
Dir: Juande Marfil
Animated
Czech Republic, 6 minutes

Lively and expressive animated film that showcases an unlikely relationship that is almost beyond description. This one totally won me over, being both cute and bizarre and featuring a frantic knitter.

Birthday / Födelsedag
Dir: Jenifer Malmqvist
Cast: Åsa Karlin, Lotten Roos
Poland/Sweden, 18 minutes

Emotionally charged short featuring a lesbian couple on one of their birthdays. Brilliant display of family and relationship dynamics, fantastic chemistry and brilliant performance made this a huge stand out. You feel right there with them in the truths of the moments as they capture an impressive array of emotions from conflicted to celebratory. Fantastic.

Worldwide Short Film Festival 2010 Day 3 - Thursday June 3, 2010

Photobucket

Day 3 at the Worldwide Short Film Festival was another grey, but thankfully not that rainy day. More importantly it was another day of short film and one with lots of guests at the festival including directors from the Celebrity Shorts program Daisy Gili (The Summer House) and Chadd Harbold (One Night Only), and from Official Selection 8: The New Social Sciences Simon Jaquemet (Laura's Party). The Celebrity Shorts program had quite a lively audience, and the program was followed by a interesting Q&A (see clips here). From live action to animation, docs to the bizarre it was a great day for short film - and even had Canadian shorts & talent to boot.

Official Selection 8: The New Social Sciences

Wood If
Dir: J.B. Sugar
Documentary
Canada, 4 minutes

Fun documentary showcasing woodworking in process with an unusual display of projects in curious definitions of their respective 'home' settings. Very clever.

The Wonder Hospital
Dir: Beomsik Shimbe Shim
Cast: Winna Regan
USA, 12 minutes

Inventive and bizarre short that was in equal parts high concept and truly bizarre dream/nightmare like states. Playing with ideas of perception not only of what we see but how we see, we travel though a bizarre set of hoops our little protagonist jumps though before and after possible 'improvements'. I loved how this short film had a very strong point of view in such a bizarre high concept world. One of the smartest & savviest I've seen at this years festival.

The Astronomer's Sun

Dir: Simon Cartwright & Jessica Cope
Cast: David Bunting, James Caroll
UK, 6 minutes

Charming and sweet animated short film following a unique and distanced family. Surprizingly touching and emotional, it spoke volumes in simple storytelling against beautiful visuals.

Photobucket

Laura's Party
Dir: Simon Jaquemet
Cast: Bruno Cathomas, Joelle Witschi
Switzerland, 21 minutes

Having a birthday party isn't too much to ask, is it? We follow Laura as she tries to do simply that, to have and enjoy her birthday party but her motivations become greyer and greyer as the short moves on. Very emotionally charged and walking a beautifully ambiguous line, Laura's Party is a fascinating character study heightened by the stellar performances by the cast.

Celebrity Shorts

The New Tenants
Dir: Joachim Back
Cast: Vincent D'Onfrio, David Rakoff, Jamie Harrold, Liane Balaban
Denmark/USA, 20 minutes

Hilarious comedy centred on new tenants is an apartment building whom have no idea that it's anything out of the norm. Stellar performances and witty dialogue makes this short film a cut above and a joy to watch, in all it's dismal glory.

The Summer House
Dir: Daisy Gili
Cast: Talulah Riley, Robert Pattinson
UK, 14 minutes

Historically pairing the moon landing with first love, Talulah Riley plays a young woman visiting France and recovering from her ex played by Twilight's Robert Pattinson. Ah, such hardship. Actually, it is and it gets the emotional tone of love and loss spot on in all it's messy truths.

Photobucket
The Summer House director Daisy Gili with WSFF Senior Programmer Myrocia Watamaniuk

One Night Only
Dir: Chadd Harbold
Cast: Kristen Wiig, Garret Dillahunt, Brian Petsos, Amy Seimetz
USA, 18 minutes

Two couple out on the town for One Night Only whom don't know each other that well, or perhaps too much. Great music and fantastic acting make this an highly enjoyable short to watch. All the performances are strong, but sfter seeing Kristen Wiig in this dramatic role I'm totally psyched to see her do that again. A real treat.

See selections from the Q&A with directors Daisy Gili (The Summer House) and Chadd Harbold (One Night Only) here.

Worldwide Short Film Festival 2010 Day 2 - Wednesday June 2, 2010

Photobucket

It was a rather rainy at the festival for Day 2, every time I stepped out of the theatre it was spitting and splattering away. It was nice to get back inside and enjoy lots of short film! I took in three programs: Doris - a selection of shorts created out of a Swedish film manifesto to encourage women in film and where all the key roles in the film must be held by women, onedotzero: New British Talent '09 from up & coming UK talent and lastly one program I always look forward to, Sci-Fi: OUT THERE. So many shorts, so little time. Let's take a look at some of the offerings from each of the programs, and keep our fingers crossed that the rain stays away.

Photobucket

Doris Program
The Doris Network was founded in Sweden in 1999 and later created the Doris Manifesto, which outlines that each film must have at least one female lead, have all key creative positions filled by women including scriptwriters and score composers. The omnibus present a collection of 8 shorts that all meet that standard. For more about the Doris Manifesto click here. If you are interested in women in film, I'd bet you'd also be interested in The Bechdel Test for women in movies.

Mon 3
Dir: Lena Koppel
Sweden, 14 minutes

Waiting for a way to get home from a party, we see two young women that are not only looking to get home, but also to get away. Stuck on the side of the road we wonder as to what their mystery and secrets are. Very strong performances from the young cast in a tough situation.

Fish
Dir: Åsa Johannisson
Cast: Gry Lambertsen, Rune Anderson
Sweden, 10 minutes

Beautiful and whimsical, Fish tells a story of a woman who has an unusually strong bond to her fish. Absolutely delightful and expressive though movement and action, the is a fantastic range of emotion displayed throughout. Top notch.

Susanne Goes Single / Susanne Blir Singel
Dir: Lena Hanno-Clyne
Sweden, 15 minutes

With the intensity of a thriller, Susanne Goes Single / Susanne Blir Singel tells one womans journey away from her verbally abusive husband and into a unique holiday experience. I really enjoyed the situational awkwardness of this short which is played very well. Great performance by the lead actress, who often has an amazing undercurrent of tension seeped in repressed expression.

Shoot Me / Skjut Mig
Dir: Anna Hylander
Sweden, 14 minutes

I really enjoyed this short film that is made up of a cast entirely of women, and has a heist-like feel to it. It really showcase the brilliance of women and how we see things differently. It surprized me more than once, and I was happy to be surprize. Beautiful visuals and a rich colour palette take a simple carjacking to a story with real heart and soul.

Director Anna Hylander was in attendance at the screening and discussed the Doris Manifesto and her film Shoot Me / Skjut Mig. Here are some highlights of the Q&A:
- The Doris Manifesto was a step to not just complain about but to do something to make a change and get more women involved in film. They are hoping that the Manifesto takes on a life of it's own to encourage more people to follow it's mandate.
- re: Shoot Me / Skjut Mig, originally some of the characters in the story were male, but she changed it to all be women and creating a fictional universe where only women existed. The music was created by 3 women, a combination of composers and singer/songwriters who watched the short and then live composed the score.

onedotzero: New British Talent '09

Round/XX Teens
Dir: Kirk Hendry
UK, 5 minutes

Creative & compelling this short film has an amazing story told through hand shadows. It's absolutely spectacular, great story, creative vision and a joy to watch.

Photograph of Jesus
Dir: Laurie Hill
UK, 7 minutes

Animation that expressing the real, and impossible, requests for photographs at the Getty Images archives. Hilarious, yet still very polite in a oh-so-British way. Loved it.

I Stood Up
Dir:James Willis & Lucy Tcherniak
Cast: Simon Tcherniak, Maya Wasowizc
UK, 3 minutes

Heartbreaking and overwhelming , this short film does a stellar job of portraying and experiential and emotional moment of regret. Short but certainly not sweet, we see the consequence of an everyday act as it haunts in memory and beyond. Frighteningly well done.

I See What You Are Saying
Dir: Lottie White
UK, 5 minutes

Great short film expressing the experience of being deaf, not only creatively and aptly displaying not just the challenges but also the joy and freedom of many different means of communication.

The Hobbyist
Dir: Justin A Waite
UK, 4 minutes

Hilarious short film done documentary style with a brilliantly deadpan performance of the titular 'Hobbyist' and his creation. Great display of taking a fantastic idea and exploring it to it's maximum with using low tech, but effective, means. Had me giggling throughout.

Photobucket

Sci-Fi: OUT THERE

Defoe
Dir: Ross Neil
Cast: Glenn Doherty, Thom Glover
UK, 9 minutes

Visually stunning short sci-fi film about an displaced astronaut who crash lands on a planet. Stellar make-up and costuming alongside the brilliant effects made this film very effective and atmospheric. Truly felt alien, in the best possible way.

Vostok Station
Dir: Dylan Pharazyn
Cast: Matthew Sunderland
New Zealand, 8 minutes

Beautiful visual storytelling gives us a rich palette to enjoy as we see the unfortunately dismal aftermath of a catastrophic event through the eyes and experience of a survivor. Haunting, beautiful and experiential all at the same time. Very impressive.

Pumzi
Dir: Wanuri Kahiu
Cast: Kudzani Moswela, Chantelle Burger
South Africa/Kenya, 23 minutes

I loved Pumzi. Futuristic and set in a 'virtual natural history museum' in Eastern African territory, our protagonist Asha is curious, brave and cunning on her quest to do her part to help humanity, and the world. Fantastic setting, great effects, strong performances and a strong message make it a must see short film. It's also so refreshing to see a female protagonist in a science fiction, I don't think I even realized how rarely that is the case until I saw, and enjoyed, Pumzi.

Worldwide Short Film Festival 2010 Day 1 - Tuesday June 1, 2010

Photobucket

Nothing like an opening night! The Worldwide Short Film Festival 2010 kicked off last night at the Bloor Cinema to a bustling and enthusiastic crowd all set and reading to see the Opening Gala: Award Winners from Around the World program. As a special treat, Runaway director Cordell Barker was in attendance to discuss his award winning short with Festival Director Eileen Arandiga before the screening. You can see video clips of that discussion along with opening night and welcome speech here.

Seeds of the Fall / Slitage
Dir: Patrik Edlund
Cast: Anki Larssojn, Jacob Nordenson
Sweden, 17 minutes

Offbeat comedy of bizarre interconnecting events between 2 neighbourhood couples that lead to an odd proposition. This one was certainly a crowd pleaser.

Tungijoq
Dirs: Paul Raphaël, Félix Lajeunesse
Cast: Tanya Tagaq, Zacharias Kunuk
Canada, 7 minutes

Absolutely stunning short that is so gorgeous I almost felt out of my seat and wanted to launch into the film itself. Ethereal, hypnotic and beautiful, the atmosphere and world created in the film is filled with life and energy at every turn. Alive and intense against the backdrop of a tundra setting, we follow the journey of a shape shifting woman and a seal hunt. This short film is a total stand out for me, hypnotic and beautiful I felt completely transported watching it.
Gorgeous.

You can watch Tungijoq online here.

The Six Dollar Fifty Man
Dirs: Mark Albiston, Louis Sutherland
Cast: Oscar Vandy-Connor, Celina Russo-Bewick
New Zealand, 15 minutes

Escapism to ideas of superheroes, Andy prefers these ideas as a means for coping with school bullies. The perfect casting with the character of Andy takes the film from a fun idea to a great treat, he's got the rough and tumble look and is mischievous by default, but certainly not malicious by nature. Refreshing and charming take on being the underdog, we cheer along through the magical realism to the actual realism.

It's Sunday! / C'est Dimanche!
Dir: Samir Guesmi
Cast: Elise Oppong, Illiès Boukouirene
France, 30 minutes

Charming (long) short that's builds up from the result of young Ibrahim's attempt to hide the truth from his father. I wasn't convinced at first in the characters, but the slow burn eventually won me over as it showcased really touching relationship moments that were unexpected, believable and heartwarming. Fantastic.

The Opening Gala: Award Winners from Around the World program also screens on Sunday June 6, 2010 at 9:30pm at the Cumberland.

Worldwide Short Film Festival 2010 Preview

"THE END IS NEAR" is the catch phrase for the 16th year of the Worldwide Short Film Festival, and I love it. One of the things I always say about shorts is that if you don't like it, it won't be long before it's over, but that is rarely the case with this festival as they have such strong & interesting programming that I can't wait to see this years films. I also love that their website url is www.shorterisbetter.com. Yay for all us short people! It is better! The festival opens tomorrow night with the Opening Gala program: Award Winners From Around the World, including the fantastic Canadian short Runaway.

Ladies in the house! Two of the programs I'm really looking forward to this year are the Lunafest touring program showcasing short films by, for, about women. Keeping the same vein, there is also the Swedish omnibus program DORIS, from the Doris network which was founded to encourage and empower female filmmakers. If these are your style, you probably also want to check out Official Selection 11: Not Just From Venus which features an "eclectic group of unforgettable heroines". I'm sold!

One of the programs I always look forward to every year is SciFi Out There. Keeping it crazy there are also the Midnight Mania programs: Creepy and Freaky. Scary stuff!

From the weird to the big wigs, the Celebrity Shorts program brings familiar names and faces to the short and sweet. Twilight fans will be delighted to hear that this year's program includes the short The Summer House starring none other than Robert Pattinson pre-Twilight. More big wigs include Crispin Glover and John C. Reilly in Drunk History: Tesla & Edison, Don Cheadle and Will Ferrell in Drunk History: Douglass & Lincoln and the voices of Meryl Streep and Forest Whitaker in Higglety Pigglety Pop! or There Must be More to Life.

You can also travel around the world, or rather have the world come to you - short and sweetly through several of this years programs. The country focus this year turns the Spotlight on Poland (Part I, Part 2 and Platige Image), check out the grades for the Film School Spotlight: Centro de Capacitacion Cinematografica in Mexico, and head over the pond with onedotzero: New British Talent '09.

Looking for laughs? Several programs should fit the bill with from Laughter Without Borders to Alternative Comedy Showcase to family-friendly Shorts for Shorties: The Great Chase. The musically inclined have interesting selections to choose from including When All is Said and Sung and Scene Not Herd: Music Videos.

All there is so much more. Check out the schedule and click through on the program name to find out more. So much more.

That is just a section of the programs. For more information, check out the Worldwide Short Film Festival website, Program Descriptions, Film Schedule, Symposium Details, Location Information, Box Office Information or Purchase Tickets online.

You can also find the festival on Twitter, Facebook and Youtube.
