Toronto After Dark Film Festival 2009 Day 8 - Friday August 21, 2009

Photobucket

Day 8 of the Toronto After Dark Film Festival marked the closing of the festival for 2009. Although it is always sad to mark the last day, at least it was done in style and more importanly with great films. As a special treat, we got to see not only the fantastic scheduled short of Denis Villeneuve's Next Floor but Danse Macabre was also replayed in its entirety after being cut short during Day 7 due to the tornado. On top of all that we had a packed house for the screening of the zombie baby film Grace with a fantastic Q&A with writer/director Paul Solet and a stellar after party. Now, that is how you wrap up a festival!

To hear and see about Day 8 check out my TADFF'09 Vlog for Day 8.

Danse Macabre
Dir: Pedro Pires
Canada, 6 minutes

Absolutely stunning short following a corpse with movement and emotion. Art direction and tone range from gritty to clinical to mystical and all fit in perfectly. Fantastic.

Grace
Writer/Dir: Paul Solet
Cast: Jordan Ladd, Gabrielle Rose, Samantha Ferris, Malcolm Stewart, Stephen Park, Serge Houde
Canada/USA

Grace exceeded my expectations by leaps and bounds, as it is much more than just a zombie film but rather an exploration playing on the powerful persistence and resilience of motherhood. A well developed story with strong performances is the perfect starting point for a demise into the realm of the bizarre. This film has great pacing which develops organically with the gradual shifts in tone that build a metamorphosis over all aspects of the film from the acting to visual style to music. All this and a zombie baby to boot! What makes Grace a brilliant horror flick is that it doesn't go for shock-a-minute or trick scares but rather takes a truly horrific premise and places it in a perfectly believable setting. There is nothing more scary than believing, and believe it you will.

Hopefuls in the Rush Line for Trick 'r Treat

Well, where to begin with Day 7 of the Toronto After Dark Film Festival? It was a whirlwind from start to finish. We all knew it would be a crazy day with the sell out screening of Trick 'r Treat but I was amazed to see the huge rush line at 6:20pm for the 9:45pm screening - it went all the way from the theatre to the corner of Bathurst & Bloor. The evening started out with the 7pm screening of Danse Macabre and The Forbidden Door, but due to a tornado (!) the screening stalled during Danse Macabre. Now, things did get back up and running but unfortunately we didn't get to see the 35mm version The Forbidden Door which would have been such a treat - but we did get to see it albeit with an occasional watermark. The crowd was very patient and occasionally vocal but that made for a very memorable screening, and one that ended by exiting through the back doors and ending up behind the theatre. That was a first for me!

Passholder Line for The Forbidden Door

Photobucket

The Forbidden Door / Pintu terlarang
Dir: Joko Anwar (Dead Time: Kala)
Cast: Fachry Albar, Marsha Timothy, Ario Bayu, Tio Pakusodewo
Indonesia

This film was high on my anticipated list for the festival however it looked so freaking scary I was almost concerned about seeing it. The context and ideas can be pretty extreme at times but the film stays centred with Fachry Albar fantastic performance in the lead role of Gambir, an artist whom appears to have achieved all the things to desire in life yet always has an undertone of melancholy and despair. What lies behind the achievements, the successes and The Door? The Forbidden Door is a rare film where every odd moment that puts you off kilter ends up falling perfectly into place, yet not necessarily in the spot you expect.

See introduction to the screening of Danse Macabre and The Forbidden Door by Toronto After Dark Film Festival programmer Todd Brown here.

Batmilk
Dir: Brandon Blommaert
Canada, 1 minute

Bright & creative this really short animated short give a look at a bizarre life cycle.

Trick 'r Treat
Writer/Dir: Michael Dougherty
Cast: Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, Dylan Baker, Tahmoh Penikett
USA

The sell out crowd ate up Trick 'r Treat like Halloween candy. An anthology film with numerous concurrent threads over the course of one Halloween we follow characters of all ages in their often sinister seasonal traditions. The spirit of the film did celebrate the holiday and focused primarily on the tricks than over the treats. Although it is exciting to see a film that really goes for the holiday spirit I found the combination of no character in particular to cheer for, several continuity issues and not a trickster at heart myself, this film didn't quite resonate with me.

Toronto After Dark Film Festival Director & Founder Adam Lopez introduces Legend of the Seven Bloody Torturers and Must Love Death

Legend of the Seven Bloody Torturers
Dir: Conall Pendergast
Canada, 5 minutes

Style runs strong in the black & white short that brings a comedic result to the red tape of torture.

See introduction to Legend of the Seven Bloody Torturers with director Conall Pendergast here.

Must Love Death
Dir: Andreas Schaap
Cast: Manon Kahle, Lucie Pohl, Katjana Gerz, Sami Loris, Jeff Burrell, Peter Farkas, Philipp Rafferty, Tobias Schenke
Germany

No one is safe from love or devices in this US set but Germany filmed and acted (in English) torture porn rom com. Yep, you read that right. It's successful on both ends although I know I missed some of the nods beyond Star Trek and The Terminator to various films but even so it was surprizingly funny. This was not high on my list of 'to see's' at the festival but it provided well more than enough laughs to make it exceed expectations. For those wary of violence, the torture parts are pretty extreme so watch at your own risk.

Git Gob
Dir: Philip Eddolls
Canada, 2 minutes

In this very short short we are treated to a unique dialogue between two creatures in a funny but also suprizingly succinct way. This one was quite a feat, successfully communicated messages in a non-traditional but very clear fashion.

See introduction to Git Gob with director Philip Eddolls here.

Rough Cut / Yeong-hwa-neun yeong-hwa-da
Dir: Jang Hun
Cast: So Ji-seob, Kang Ji-Hwan, Ko Chang-Seok, Hong Su-hyeon
South Korea

Spectacular South Korean action/meta film is the best way to describe Rough Cut. This was one of my most anticipated films of the festival and it delivered. Take a tough guy actor and match him to a gangster actor wannabe and you end up with a film that delivers in innovative action screens, a fantastic story with beautiful three dimensional characters. Kang Ji-Hwan and So Ji-Seob play the dual protagonists brilliantly, going head to head throughout the film on and off set. The energy and tension created throughout is alarming and perfectly parallels the theme of the 'making it real'. It's a fantastic film is you are looking for some "Action!".

Photobucket

Don't get left in the dark, indeed! Day 5 at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival was all about the scares. From creepy kids to a crazy serial killers it was certainly the night with the most nervous giggles, eye covering and audible cringes. Also we were treated to a great Q&A with Noah Segan, actor and co-producer of Someone's Knocking at the Door.

Toronto After Dark Film Festival Director & Founder Adam Lopez introduces The Children

The Children
Dir: Tom Shankland (The Killing Gene / W Delta Z)
Cast: Eva Birthistle, Stephen Campbell Moore, Jeremy Sheffield, Rachel Shelley
UK

I always look forward to a genuinely scary horror flick and The Children fit that slot nicely this year at the festival. We start with a family holiday dinner of siblings, partners and kids. A fair number of high energy kids that don't pay too much attention to what people say. The funny thing is, that isn't the scares and it really sets a great tone of realism into family and parental dynamics and even competitive parenting which gives the film a unique point of view for a horror flick. Of course it does turn creepy - really creepy and you don't want to be near those kids, believe you-me. One of the few films this year I actually almost covered my eyes due to the fantastic build up of tension. Freaky, creepy and funny to boot The Children is a great film.

Although director Tom Shankland was not at the screening, he sent along a note that was read by Adam Lopez, Toronto After Dark Film Festival Director & Founder, at the screening. See video of Tom Shankland's hilarous words here.

Heart of Karl
Dir: Steven Kostanski (Laser Ghosts 2: Return to Laser Cove)
Canada, 15 minutes

Bizarre short that blends family loyalty with skeleton looking creatures, super powers, missing hearts and lots and lots of blood.

Toronto After Dark Film Festival Director & Founder Adam Lopez introduces with Someone's Knocking at the Door lead actor and co-producer Noah Segan

Someone's Knocking at the Door
Dir: Chad Ferrin
Cast: Noah Segan, Andrea Rueda, Ezra Buzzington, Timothy Muskatell
USA

If you take sex, drugs, rock'n'roll and add students, serial killers and sexual violence together and trip it all up you have Someone's Knocking at the Door. It's fair to say I'm not the target audience but the strong performance by Noah Segan kept me with the film. If you are a fan of druggie and slasher films this is right up your alley.
