30th Genie Award Winners

The Genie Award Winners have been announced and Polytechnique sweeps as the big winner, taking in 9 of the 11 awards it was nominated for including Best Motion Picture, Director, Lead Actress and Supporting Actor. Other multiple winning films include Fifty Dead Men Walking (Adapted Screenplay, Art Direction) and Grande ourse: La clé des possibles / The Master Key (Make-Up & Original Score). Surprizes of the night include only 1 win for NURSE.FIGHTER.BOY (Original Song) out of it's 10 nominations and I was also really I hoping for Pontypool to take home either of the awards it was nominated, but no luck there. Special awards of the night include the Claude Jutra award going to Xavier Dolan for J'ai tué ma mère / I Killed My Mother, Golden Reel (highest grossing film) to De père en flic / Father and Guns and Academy Special Acheivement Award to Mel Hoppenheim.

The broadcast of the awards included fun retrospectives of previous actors & director acceptance speeches over the past 30 years which made the show well worth catching on IFC. They had a webcast over at CBC.ca but unfortunately neither that cast nor the televised event were live, and in the age of twitter that meant very few surprizes once it came to watching the show. But, still had a lot of great moments and acceptances speeches in the 1 hour broadcast where there showed 8 of the awards being handed out. And the awards went to....

82nd Academy Awards Winners

I'll be honest. The only award I was strongly invested in tonights Oscar's was Kathryn Bigelow for director The Hurt Locker. And she won. Yes! After that, it's all cake & icing of which there was a lot. The Hurt Locker went to pick up a total of 6 wins: Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, Film Editing, Sound Editing & Sound Mixing. After that the most wins went to Avatar with Art Direction, Cinematography & Visual Effects. Two films came in at 2 wins each: Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire and Up. After that, any film that won was for one award. Overall there were very few surprizes and the show ran pretty smoothly.

I enjoyed the Best Actor and Best Actress nomination introductions from their peers, which was added to the awards last year. This always feels like a heartfelt exchange from peer to peer and gives the audience a lovely insight into the person, and also gives us more time with each the actors. I hope they keep this up. I like the nod to horror films, which was included as a sort of 'usually they go unacknowledged', but a lot of the clips were from really old films. The montage for the people we've lost was very beautiful though, James Taylor sang as they showed clips from each of the artist works along with their picture, name and what their did. Very classy. John Hughes had a separate tribute earlier in the night with clips along with reflections from people he'd worked with, which was also really well done. Overall the show ran about 3 hours and 35 min, slightly longer than noted on the tv guide but as always I wished they've just make it a bit longer and let everyone have their moment to say their acceptance speech. They might have decided to cut those short to allow more time for doing the ten best picture intros.

Slightly Bizarre Moments:
  • An Education, best picture nominee introduced by Colin Firth - would have been nice to see it introduced by a woman consider the context of the film, even though Colin Firth did a lovely job.
  • Almost all the short film directors and/or awards that went to more than 1 recipient were cut off / music'd out. They often cut to someone in the audience while doing this so it was less noticeable.
  • Some of the nominees names were said aloud, sometimes it was pre-recorded. Saw no pattern here as to why, other than sometimes noms were read really quickly.
  • During the Animated Film nominees, they had fake-y interviews with the characters in the film. The fact that The Princess & the Frog interview was with characters other than the female protagonist says everything you need to know about the film.
  • Ryan Reynolds introduced The Blind Side, Best Picture nominee as “It’s a true story, as American as Football”. Y'all know he's Canadian - right?
  • Thank you cam speeches are available online here (and are preceded by 30 second ad. 30 sec times 24 awards.. that's 12 minutes of ads if there is one in each category).

Here are a few of my favourite quotes of the night:
  • "Thank you to the 3,000 unofficial sponsors. No logos were harmed during the project" - acceptance speech for the short film Logorama
  • “They just said my name at the Oscars. I better enjoy it because it probably won’t happen again” - Tyler Perry - while introducing Film Editing nominees
  • "If you want to do it, do it. Get out there and be creative, it's not a waste of time" - Michael Giacchino, acceptance speech for Musical Score for Up
  • "We are lucky she is so young, because we have a lifetime of work to look forward too" Peter Skarsgard introducing Best Actress nominee Carey Mulligan
  • Michael Sheen re: Helen Mirren "Is it wrong to be so wildly attracted to the Queen?"
  • "The breath and depth of her heart.. is something you can never miss" Forest Whitaker introducing Sandra Bullock
  • "Did I really earn this or did I just wear you all down" - Sandra Bullock, Best Actress for The Blind Side
  • “Well, the time has come” Barbara Streisand announcing Kathryn Bigelow's win for Best Director for The Hurt Locker
  • "It's a moment of a lifetime" Kathryn Bigelow winning Best Director for The Hurt Locker
  • "They are there for us, and we are there for them" - Kathryn Bigelow, during Best Picture acceptance speech for The Hurt Locker

Now, let's look at the winners

BAFTA Winners 2010 (for films from 2009)

The results are in and The Hurt Locker sweeps the BAFTA's winning 6 awards: Best Film, Director for Kathryn Bigelow, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing and Sound. Absolutely fantastic news, and thrilling to see Bigelow take home the award. Avatar won 2 awards this evening for Visual Effects and Production. Also in the 2 winner category is The Young Victoria which took home Costumes along with Make Up & Hair.

The acting categories had a combination of locks in the supporting categories with winners being Mo'Nique for Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire and Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds. Lead acting awards went to home base talent of Colin Firth for A Single Man and Carey Mulligan for An Education. I couldn't be more thrilled as they were excellent lead performances. Twilight fans can rejoice as Orange British Rising Star award went to Kristen Stewart.

Also thrilled to see director Duncan Jones get well deserved love with being awarded Outstanding debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for Moon.

Also exciting to see Outstanding British Film go to Andrea Arnold's Fish Tank which opened in Toronto this week, and award for Best Film Not in the English Language went to A Prophet which opens in Toronto on March 5, 2010.

Results thanks to Bafta Online Twitter - that's a first, and much better than waiting for the results especially as there was some confusion over live streams and pre shows and during the show, etc. There is a stream of the awards here, although it's a big post-live but pre-the re-broadcast. See results also posted on the BAFTA website.

82nd Academy Awards Nominations

It's Oscar nomination day and the nominations were announced bright and early at 8:30 EST this morning, and oddly it's a year of very few big surprizes but a year of several happy surprizes.

The heavy hitters this year are The Hurt Locker and Avatar which are both up for 9 nominations, and are competing against each other in 7 of those nominations: Cinematography, Directing, Film Editing, Original Score, Best Picture, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing. The Hurt Locker is also up for Original Screenplay and a very well deserved nomination for Jeremy Renner - Performance by an actor in a leading role and Avatar's additional two nominations are for Art Direction and Visual Effects (which has to be a lock this year!).

One of the biggest changes this year to the awards is the switch from have 5 to 10 best picture nominations, which is a great way for more films to get more recognition, but if it doesn't go to either the The Hurt Locker and Avatar I'll be very surprized! When the Best Picture nominations starting with Avatar, which received zero audience reaction or response. That followed with The Blind Side being nominated with blind sided a lot of us! The remaining 8 nominations are The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, Inglourious Basterds, Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire, A Serious Man, Up and Up in the Air.

Up receiving a Best Picture nomination has been getting lots of buzz considering no film has had that honour since Beauty and the Beast (1991). Also interesting that the Animated film nominations this year rises to 5 films nominated from 3 in previous years, which means that the 2 categories only 3 nomination category this year are Make Up and Visual Effects

Speaking of Make Up, I've heard several rumblings recently on the darker films not getting make up nominations and I think there is some truth to that, this year District 9 would have been well placed to get a make up nomination although Il Divo, Star Trek and The Young Victoria are all well deserved or their nominations.

I have to re-iterated my excitement that Jeremy Renner is nominated for Performance by an actor in a leading role for The Hurt Locker, and it's no surprize to see him in the company of Jeff Bridges there for Crazy Heart but this is the one category I was really hoping to see some more gutsy over safe choices. In particular it would have be thrilling to see Sam Rockwell be nominated for Moon and Tom Hardy be nominated for Bronson.

But on a more positive note there are many well deserved nominations, including for Adapted Screenplay, In the LoopThe Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus getting 2 nominations: Art Director and Costume Design, and The Young Victoria getting 3 nominations: Art Direction, Costume Design and Makeup. In fact, I think this year the costume design category is the one with the most fierce competition as all 5 films had fantastic costumes: Bright Star, Coco before Chanel, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Nine and The Young Victoria.

Congratulations to all the nominees! Looking forward to seeing how it all turns out on March 7, 2010. Now, to plot out how to see the additional 9 films I need to see in that time!

BAFTA Nominations in 2010 (films from 2009)

The BAFTA nominees for 2010 Awards have been announced and it looks like it will be an interesting year for these awards. Three film dominate the nominations with 8 nods each: Avatar, An Education and The Hurt Locker. Hot on their heels is District 9 with 7 nominations, and then Inglourious Basterds & Up in the Air each with 6 nominations.

It feels like a year with a fair amount of well deserved recognition so far. Thrilled to see that Duncan Jones (Moon) & Sam Taylor-Wood (Nowhere Boy, Love You More) are two of the nominees for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Production. Also amazing to see that Carey Mulligan was not only nominated for Leading Actress for her performance in An Education but also is in the running for the Orange Rising Star Award. All talented artist to keep you eye on.

There are a few surprizes in what we aren't seeing such as a nomination for Emily Blunt for The Young Victoria, a film that received two nods for Costumes and Make Up & Hair. I really expected Emily Blunt to get a nod here. I was also hoping for Sam Rockwell to get a Leading Actor nomination for his fantastic performance in Moon, but no luck there however the film did receive nominations for Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Production. Also really surprized to see no nomination for Tom Hardy in Bronson as I found that to be one of the strongest performances of the year.

A few of the films haven't hit theatres here in Toronto yet, but they will soon. Mark your calendars for Fish Tank (February 19, 2010), A Prophet (February 26, 2010) and Nowhere Boy (March 26, 2010). For list up more upcoming 2010 releases look here.

The BAFTA's (Orange British Academy Film Awards) will take place on Sunday February 21st 2010. See more info at the BAFTA site.

67th Golden Globe Winners

Well the ballots were counted, delivered, sealed, broken and revealed. Was a bit of a little bit of a little something for everyone night. The surprizes were on the subtle side this year, for example both Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep had 2 nominations each individually, which normally the odds are not to win either but tonight - they both one once. Once was a big number tonight with the majority of films winning getting 1 award which left us with no sweeps this year. The most any one film received was 2 and that happened 3 times: Up (Score, Animated Film), Crazy Heart (Song, Actor - Drama) and Avatar (director & Film - Drama). The Avatar wins appeared to be the big surprize of the night, along with The Hurt Locker winning zero awards so surprizing that even James Cameron during his acceptance speech said that he hadn't prepared as he thought Kathryn Bigelow would win. Another surprize that Up in the Air only went home with one award.

Speeches were a nice highlight of the night and it started off right with a gorgeous and heartfelt speech from Mo'Nique who won Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire. Drew Barrymore also had a fantastic speech that started by commending Mo'Nique and going from frazzled to fantastic. Robert Downey Jr. also gave a great almost anti-speech about all the people he shouldn't thank but did and was his usual charming self. I also have to say big kudo's to "Glee" for stressing the importance of arts education during their acceptance speech for TV Series, Musical or Comedy.

People Choice Awards Winners 2010

The People's Choice Awards were presented last night and the winners announced and awards handed out. It's interesting to watch the selections from beginning to end as they started up to ten selections in each category, then paired that down to five finalists, then the winners announced tonight. The 2 hour broadcast felt rushed at times and they only showed 19 of the 34 awards on the broadcast, sometimes with introductions showing all the nominees and sometimes not. It wasn't hard to figure out the winners - if they were in the audiences and shown on camera, chances are they won something. But, this awards show really does show who has the largest fan base and that is always interesting to see.

As for speeches, Sandra Bullock & Hugh Jackman both had great acceptance speeches with Sandra Bullock's being heartfelt and emotional and Jackman’s being humours indicating if he's foreign & an actions star then it's time to run for Governor. I wasn't impressed with Taylor Lautner’s although he seemed sincerely overwhelmed he said almost nothing and although flattering I'm can't imagine it would have come as a big surprise to win breakout movie actor.

The worst wasn't speeches but the introduction from George Lopez who introduced the nominees for Favourite Movie Actress with 'jokes' about nudity, I mean really do these women need to hear that kind of talk before possibly winner/losing an award? But LL Cool J brought out the classes cards when introduced the nominees for Favourite Female Artist talking about women who know how to take care of business – thank you LL!

For the TV awards I'm thrilled to see that both "The Vampire Diaries" & "Glee" picked up awards for Favourite New TV Drama and Comedy respectively. No one from "The Vampire Diaries" was there to accept as they are currently shooting but Nina Dobrev twitted that she heard the news while at dinner with Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley and gave a big thank you to the fans for voting moments after the award was announced. Unfortunately the worst product placement came after the acceptance speech from the awesome cast of "Glee" where pizza was brought to the audience. Here I thought when they said they had a treat for folks it would a song!

The night ended on a great introduction by Sacha Baron Cohen to acceptance award for best movie actor & subsequently favourite movie actor of the decade for most votes for Johnny Depp. Sacha Baron Cohen reminded us that Johnny Depp sets trends such as pirates being cool and how now it’s ok to be middle age man offering kids candy (Willy Wonka) and in the future for men to invite young girls to tea (Alice in Wonderland). Then Johnny Depp gave a heartfelt thank you to the crowd who thanked him back with a standing ovation.

Overall there were some fun moments and great speeches but I didn't love all the product placement all over the place. There were some promos for upcoming film Robin Hood (trailer), Clash of the Titans (trailer) and the upcoming season of Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains.

Metacritic Top 200 in 2009

I don't check Metacritic often enough, perhaps as it's one of the few lists out there that has titles that aren't as accessible as sites like IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes. Metacritic has far more foreign and indie films in their top lists - something I consider a good thing, but frustrating if you can't see the films but thats because Metacritic gives a score (a weighted average of scores by critics) and for me is what wish lists are made from.

Having a look at their lists they do list the best reviewed films by year and I'm thrilled to see that The Hurt Locker tops their 2009 and also to see Hirokazu Kore-eda's fantastic Still Walking / Aruitemo aruitemo ranks in at #3. Along with the best reviewed films of 2009, I've also pulled out the 2009 titles from their all time top 200 and an impressive 12 titles made that list. As the 200 will change over time I've added a list of 200 for reference purposes. If you feel like reminiscing on 2008 you can see their top 15 from 2008 here.

Interesting comparison to the IMDb list there are few films in common - Up is the only film that made both overall top (200 or 250) lists.
