You have voted and the results are in for the 2011 The People Choice Awards! The show aired last night January 5, 2011 on CBS and the winners have been announced.
Twilight fever still pretty strong winning with The Twilight Saga: Eclipse winning Favourite Movie and Favorite Drama Movie, and Kristen Stewart did win for Favorite Movie Actress and the team all together won Favorite On Screen Team (Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner). But the love got to be spread around as Johnny Depp won Favorite Movie Actor over Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner and Favorite Movie Star Under 25 went to Zac Efron over Emma Watson, Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Vanessa Hudgens.
I was really hoping that Favorite Horror Movie would go to The Last Exorcism but it went to the likely younger crowd pleasure A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010). That was a strong category with year as it also included The Crazies, Let Me In and Resident Evil: Afterlife.
It's so odd to write Favorite without the u. I'm a fan of the Favourite, as is my spellchecker - but alas, the official categories titles have no u, so I'm leaving them out to be all consistent like.
The awards cover film, TV, music and some miscellaneous ones too. See results below and you can also check them out here on the People's Choice Awards site.

13th British Independent Film Awards Winners
The waiting is over and the winners have been announced for the 2010 British Independent Film Awards and The King's Speech graces the top of the awards with 5 wins: Best Independent British Film, Best Screenwriting (David Seidler), plus three acting awards including best performance actor (Colin Firth) and both supporting categories for actress (Helena Bonham Carter) and actor (Geoffrey Rush); the fourth acting award goes to Carey Mulligan for Never Let Me Go. I was really impressed to see Monsters be recognized several times over winning 3 awards, and 2 of the 3 awards for the film going to Gareth Edwards for both Best Director and Best Technical Achievement and it also won Best Achievement in Production. One of the only big surprizes I found to be the Exit Through the Gift Shop did not win best documentary, although I've not seen all of the nominees including the film that did win: Enemies of the People.

BAFTA Nominations in 2010 (films from 2009)
The BAFTA nominees for 2010 Awards have been announced and it looks like it will be an interesting year for these awards. Three film dominate the nominations with 8 nods each: Avatar, An Education and The Hurt Locker. Hot on their heels is District 9 with 7 nominations, and then Inglourious Basterds & Up in the Air each with 6 nominations.
It feels like a year with a fair amount of well deserved recognition so far. Thrilled to see that Duncan Jones (Moon) & Sam Taylor-Wood (Nowhere Boy, Love You More) are two of the nominees for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Production. Also amazing to see that Carey Mulligan was not only nominated for Leading Actress for her performance in An Education but also is in the running for the Orange Rising Star Award. All talented artist to keep you eye on.
There are a few surprizes in what we aren't seeing such as a nomination for Emily Blunt for The Young Victoria, a film that received two nods for Costumes and Make Up & Hair. I really expected Emily Blunt to get a nod here. I was also hoping for Sam Rockwell to get a Leading Actor nomination for his fantastic performance in Moon, but no luck there however the film did receive nominations for Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Production. Also really surprized to see no nomination for Tom Hardy in Bronson as I found that to be one of the strongest performances of the year.
A few of the films haven't hit theatres here in Toronto yet, but they will soon. Mark your calendars for Fish Tank (February 19, 2010), A Prophet (February 26, 2010) and Nowhere Boy (March 26, 2010). For list up more upcoming 2010 releases look here.
The BAFTA's (Orange British Academy Film Awards) will take place on Sunday February 21st 2010. See more info at the BAFTA site.

Poll Results: Golden Globes Noms Are Out!
The results are in and the enthusiasm over the Golden Globe Nominations is a little lukewarm with the top spot being a tie between Oh, Nellie.. More Films To See! and Meh, I'll Wait for the Oscars. I'm an Oh Nellie! Person myself, so many films so see so little time! But 24% are excited by responding Yay! The Globes Rock, and the rounding out the vote is I Don't Follow Awards Shows which chimes in at 16%.

Alliance of Women Film Journalists - 2009 EDA Awards
I always look forward to seeing the results of the Alliance of Women Film Journalists EDA Awards, and the winners for 2009 have been announced. They have great categories like "Actress Defying Age and Ageism" and "Bravest Performance" and I particularly find it interesting that they point out the "Most Egregious Age Difference Between The Leading Man and The Love Interest". 2009 Golden Globe Nominations (films only)
Today is when awards season feels like it officially kicks off with the nominees announced for the 67th Golden Globe Awards for films in 2009. The Globes cast a wider net than the Oscars with splitting film and main actor nods into both drama and comedy/musical selections, which allows more films to be recognized especially in the comedy department. This year Up in the Air leads the race with 6 nominations, followed by the musical Nine with 5 nominations and then both Avatar and Inglourious Basterds chime in with 4 nominations. Rounding things out we have tons of films with 3 nominations: Tom Ford's directorial debut A Single Man, Nelson Mandela/1995 Rugby World Cup film Invictus, the romantic comedy It's Complicated, festival sweetheart film Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire and the powerhouse that is The Hurt Locker. I'm thrilled that The Hurt Locker's nominations include one for director Kathryn Bigelow but shocked to see that Jeremy Renner did not get a nomination for acting I wonder if the bias of recency is at play as Tobey Maguire did get a nomination for Brothers but sadly as I predicted no love for the well deserved performance by Jake Gyllenhaal. Thrilled to see the love for Joseph Gordon-Levitt's performance in (500) Days of Summer, he's a great actor.
After films with multiple nominations, there are also 5 people with multiple nominations! Meryl Streep is up against herself with 2 nods for Actress Comedy / Musical for both It's Complicated and Julie & Julia. Sandra Bullock is up for 2 Actress nominations for Drama (The Blind Side) and Comedy / Musical (The Proposal). Matt Damon also sported 2 Acting nominations, 1 for Comedy / Musical (The Informant) and Supporting Actor (Invictus) which I'm a little surprized at as although it's a strong performance it's rather quiet & understated but still great to see him recognized. But it isn't just actors that are prepping for possible two statue glory, both Quentin Tarantino (Inglourious Basterds) and Jason Reitman (Up in the Air) are up for both directing and screenwriting awards.
In total we have 38 films nominated, included 5 animated (up from 3 last year) I'm shocked to say I've only seen 7 of the nominated film. Fair play that 7 of those films will be released in the next few weeks or early 2010 and 5 have no Canadian release date yet (Crazy Heart, A Prophet The Maid, The Messenger and Baarìa) but wow I feel like a slacker! Or perhaps I'm just not seeing as much American film. Either way, more films to add to the never ending to see list!
Nominated Film Lists also available by number of nominations with nominations detailed or listed by number of nominations.
The 67th Golden Globes Awards will be presented January 17th, 2010 at 8pm EST / 5pm PST live on NBC.

The announcement of the Spirit Awards nominations always feels like the beginning of awards season, and it was noted during the live stream announcement this morning that they do share them early to get the word out there on these great independent films.
