2011 People's Choice Awards Winners

You have voted and the results are in for the 2011 The People Choice Awards! The show aired last night January 5, 2011 on CBS and the winners have been announced.

Twilight fever still pretty strong winning with The Twilight Saga: Eclipse winning Favourite Movie and Favorite Drama Movie, and Kristen Stewart did win for Favorite Movie Actress and the team all together won Favorite On Screen Team (Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner). But the love got to be spread around as Johnny Depp won Favorite Movie Actor over Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner and Favorite Movie Star Under 25 went to Zac Efron over Emma Watson, Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Vanessa Hudgens.

I was really hoping that Favorite Horror Movie would go to The Last Exorcism but it went to the likely younger crowd pleasure A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010). That was a strong category with year as it also included The Crazies, Let Me In and Resident Evil: Afterlife.

It's so odd to write Favorite without the u. I'm a fan of the Favourite, as is my spellchecker - but alas, the official categories titles have no u, so I'm leaving them out to be all consistent like.

The awards cover film, TV, music and some miscellaneous ones too. See results below and you can also check them out here on the People's Choice Awards site.

2011 People's Choice Awards - Final Round of Nominees

We have the second round of voting for the 2011 People's Choice Awards which started with a rather open round of voting back in October. Nominees have been paired down from about 10 nominees per category to a final 5 in each.

I'm a little surprized that The Expendables didn't make the cut to round 2 for action films (age range for audience higher than primary online voting folk?) but Robin Hood did. Hm. Thrilled to see femme power in the favourite action star category (go Angelina Jolie!). Also surprized that Eat Pray Love didn't make favourite drama film but Julia Roberts is nominated as favourite movie actress. It's so much fun though to keep a pulse on the pop culture through these awards and see things change from year to year. I know I'm looking forward to seeing how it all plays out in January 2011!

The awards cover movies, TV and music, but I'm only looking at movie nominees (listed below). To see all Nominee Selections go here and remember you can also vote for your choices over and over again! The awards ceremony is be aired live on January 5, 2011 on CBS.

2011 People's Choice Awards - First Round of Nominees

I love following the People's Choice Awards. I know it feels like an odd fit as I love to chat about Canadian, indie & foreign film, but there's something really fun about watching the (literal) popular vote. And I'm always curious during the show how many folks will have a Sally Field moment.

The People's Choice Awards have a two-tiered voting system. You can vote now in each category for up to 5 nominees and if you don't see your favourite listed you can add your selection under 'Other'. That's pretty sweet, I'm going to have fun adding some of my own options especially in the action star and comedic star cats that only have 3 ladies out of the 12 nominees, although those 3 nominees are up from 0 from last year - woohoo! Hopefully people voiced their opinions and made that happens. I think they could even things out even further by adding Favourite Drama Star and Favourite Horror Star with a majority of women nominees to balance things out. Lots of final girls and drama queens out there!

One huh moment was seeing Edge of Darkness, Inception and Shutter Island fit as Favorite Drama Movie nominees, but for genre categorization they only to action, drama, comedy, family & horror. So, out of those I can see how drama would be a fit even if I don't see how they quite meet the definition. I can see the effects of the genre analysis on the Movie Moxie Podcast is certainly staying on my mind! Actually, the genre film categories of action, drama, comedy, & horror are all new this year - last year they only had Favourite Family Movie and Favourite Movie. Also new this year is Favorite Movie Star Under 25 which I'm shocked I actually know who most of them are! Woot! Other changes from last year include no more Favorite Independent Film, Favorite Breakout Actor, Favorite Breakout Actress and Favorite Franchise categories.

The awards cover movies, TV and music, but I'm only looking at film here and those nominees are listed below. To see all Nominee Selections go here, and don't wait - get your votes in now as the second round of voting begins on November 9, 2010.

People Choice Awards Winners 2010

The People's Choice Awards were presented last night and the winners announced and awards handed out. It's interesting to watch the selections from beginning to end as they started up to ten selections in each category, then paired that down to five finalists, then the winners announced tonight. The 2 hour broadcast felt rushed at times and they only showed 19 of the 34 awards on the broadcast, sometimes with introductions showing all the nominees and sometimes not. It wasn't hard to figure out the winners - if they were in the audiences and shown on camera, chances are they won something. But, this awards show really does show who has the largest fan base and that is always interesting to see.

As for speeches, Sandra Bullock & Hugh Jackman both had great acceptance speeches with Sandra Bullock's being heartfelt and emotional and Jackman’s being humours indicating if he's foreign & an actions star then it's time to run for Governor. I wasn't impressed with Taylor Lautner’s although he seemed sincerely overwhelmed he said almost nothing and although flattering I'm can't imagine it would have come as a big surprise to win breakout movie actor.

The worst wasn't speeches but the introduction from George Lopez who introduced the nominees for Favourite Movie Actress with 'jokes' about nudity, I mean really do these women need to hear that kind of talk before possibly winner/losing an award? But LL Cool J brought out the classes cards when introduced the nominees for Favourite Female Artist talking about women who know how to take care of business – thank you LL!

For the TV awards I'm thrilled to see that both "The Vampire Diaries" & "Glee" picked up awards for Favourite New TV Drama and Comedy respectively. No one from "The Vampire Diaries" was there to accept as they are currently shooting but Nina Dobrev twitted that she heard the news while at dinner with Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley and gave a big thank you to the fans for voting moments after the award was announced. Unfortunately the worst product placement came after the acceptance speech from the awesome cast of "Glee" where pizza was brought to the audience. Here I thought when they said they had a treat for folks it would a song!

The night ended on a great introduction by Sacha Baron Cohen to acceptance award for best movie actor & subsequently favourite movie actor of the decade for most votes for Johnny Depp. Sacha Baron Cohen reminded us that Johnny Depp sets trends such as pirates being cool and how now it’s ok to be middle age man offering kids candy (Willy Wonka) and in the future for men to invite young girls to tea (Alice in Wonderland). Then Johnny Depp gave a heartfelt thank you to the crowd who thanked him back with a standing ovation.

Overall there were some fun moments and great speeches but I didn't love all the product placement all over the place. There were some promos for upcoming film Robin Hood (trailer), Clash of the Titans (trailer) and the upcoming season of Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains.

Here are the winners, in the order in which they were presented followed by awards not shown on the broadcast:

People's Choice Awards Nominees 2010

Award season is a stirring and the The People's Choice Awards nominees have now been finalized. You can head on over to their site and vote until your heart's content. The People Choice Awards will be broad casted on air live on January 6, 2010 on CBS.

When we looked at the first round of nominations their was the option to write in your own, however no 'other' selections cracked the new list. A few surprizes with the announcements, first I'm surprized to see that Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation) didn't make Favourite Action Star! Final nominees for that category go to Christian Bale, Gerard Butler, Hugh Jackman, Shia LaBeouf and Vin Diesel. But Sam Worthington did land in the Favourite Breakout Movie Actor category along with some steep competition: Chris Pine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Taylor Lautner and Zachary Quinto. Wowza. As much as I love Twilight it is strange to see it on the list as it is from 2008, although no surpize it and it's stars landed in the top five of each of the categories they were nominated it.

From the original nominee categories, it appears that Favourite Family Movie has been replaced by Favourite Comedy, and the Favourite Franchise has disappeared altogether. To see the original nominee lists look here.

The awards cover movies, TV and music. To see all Nominee Selections go here. Here are the selections from the movie categories:

People's Choice Awards 2010 Nominee Selections

Oh my goodness, is it awards season already? Let's start off light by having a look at the awards purely based on popularity! The People's Choice Awards now have their Nominee Selections for the 2010 Awards up and you can vote for who you want to be nominated making up to 5 selections per category. If your fave isn't included in the selections they have, you can add your own selection through the 'other' box. I had to do that a few times.

My favourite categories are the selections for Independent Movie and On Screen Team, but there seems a few odd things in the nominees. As much as I love Twilight, it's odd to see it here considering for favourite film it's a 2008 film. If memory serves they can be a bit looser than other awards, such as actors winning without having a film out that year. I'm also surprized to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Favourite Breakout Movie Actor, I could have imagined that the year of Brick but now? I mean people refer to him by acronym (JGL). You don't get an acronym unless people know you pretty well!

One last harp moment. Notice anything odd about Favourite Action Star and Favourite Comedic Star nominees. Looks like a boys only club there. What about Zoe Bell, Kate Beckinsale, Antje Traue, Emma Stone, Kristin Kreuk and Moon Bloodgood for Action Stars? And Kristen Wiig, Sandra Bullock, Zooey Deschanel, Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Amanda Seyfried, Ellen Page and Jessica Biel for Comedic Stars? There are kick butt and funny ladies out there, folks!
