The MTV Movie Awards were broadcasted on Sunday June 5, 2011 and I was oddly in the States at the time but didn't get a chance to see them (you can rewatch them streaming in the US here and in Canada here), but I couldn't wait to see who were this years winners. Twilight fans will be happy as the films have consistently won best movie, best kiss and best female performance (Kristen Stewart) for the past three years including this years wins for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Little surprized to see The Twilight Saga: Eclipse win over Inception for Best Fight, but even odder is that the fight nominated from The Fighter wasn't a boxing match but rather Amy Adams & the sisters. Ah, these awards certainly keep me on my toes! Big kudos to Tom Felton who has won best villain for 2 years running for his performance as Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter series including this years win for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1; and also big congratulations to Chloe Grace Moretz who won 2 awards: best breakout star & biggest badass star winner for Kick-Ass.

The 37th Annual Saturn Award Nominations
I'm excited to finally share in the excitement of 37th Annual Saturn Award, which I was reading about everywhere last week but couldn't confirm the information on their site until just recently. But now I have and as it's the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films there are lots and lots of films I love on this list! Heading the way with the film nominations is Inception with 9 nominations, then a tie between Tron: Legacy and Let Me In with 7 nominations, then Hereafter with 6 and then LOTS with 5. It's a pretty epic list.
I can't help but love awards that include 7 nominations for Tron: Legacy including not only film & acting but also costumes & music (Goooooo Daft Punk! I'm also totally digging the supporting actress category which includes nominations for both Vanessa Redgrave (Letters to Juliet) & Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom), which couldn't be more polar opposite but both fantastic performances. Also thrilled to see so many nominations for Hereafter, one of the really under-appreciated films of 2010.
Double nominations for Leonardo DiCaprio as Best Actor in both Inception and Shutter Island, he's getting to be quite the genre buff. I'm surprized to see Ellen Page as Best Actress - Inception (where it's really a supporting role) and the reverse with Garrett Hedlund as Best Supporting Actor - Tron: Legacy (where he's really actor in this one). Although, I've only been following these awards for a couple years so I don't totally have a pulse on their process and nominees.
We have quite a while to wait for the wins as The Saturn Awards are held months away in June. I have to admit, a lot of my faves from 2010 are on this list so I will be anxiously awaiting to hear the results when it's gets to a sunnier month of the year!

Sport Film as a Genre Show Notes
- Shannon definition of Sport Films: Sport films are a subgenre of film where the central focus of the film is on an athlete, sports team, sporting event or competition. They can fall under the larger genres of drama, comedies, historical films, biopics or documentaries
- Wiki description: "This list of sports films is a compilation of films in the genre covering sports activities. Sports movies have been made since the era of silent films, such as the 1915 film The Champion starring Charlie Chaplin. Films in this genre can range from serious (Raging Bull) to silly (Horse Feathers). A classic theme for sports films is the triumph of an individual or team who prevail despite the difficulties. Men often identify with sports films in ways they wouldn't with other genres, such as spy films."

The biggest night in Hollywood has come and gone for another year as the awards were handed out for all 24 categories at the 83rd Academy Awards. The ceremony was hosted by the very charming Anne Hathaway and Oscar-nominee James Franco, and themes of the night were paying homage to Hollywood past, recognition for unlikely and championed films, thanking wives and inspiring words sent to daughters.
This was a very even split year with no films sweeping the awards, although the top two films were split between the high-profile awards and more tech-centric awards. I'm talking about the two films that took home 4 awards each: The King's Speech (Best Film, Director - Tom Hooper, Actor - Colin Firth and Original Screenplay) and Inception (Cinematography, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing and Visual Effects). Then we had The Social Network with Adapted Screenplay, Original Score and Editing. We also has several films take home two awards a piece with The Fighter (Supporting Actress - Melissa Leo, Supporting Actor - Christian Bale), Toy Story 3 (Song and Animated Film) and Alice in Wonderland (Costume Design & Art Direction). The fourth acting award was Best Actress which went to Natalie Portman for Black Swan.
No huge upsets of the evening, and I think I was most surprized by Tom Hooper for The King's Speech - not that I didn't like the film, but I just really expected it to go to either David Fincher or Darren Aronofsky. Perhaps the biggest surprize was True Grit not winning any awards after getting 10 nominations.
That the hard and fast information, but I think a lot of the best moments of the awards are in the speeches and unexpected moments. Here are some of my favourites:

- Dresses: Mila Kunas' Lavender flowy low cut yet creatively covering dress, Sharon Stone's black feathery glam goodness and Nicole Kidman in a white and sparkly number.
- Melissa Leo dropping the F-Bomb during her heartfelt acceptance speech.
- Christian Bale saying "I'm not going to drop the f bomb like she (Melissa) did, I've done that plenty before."
- Justin Timberlake saying he was Banksy.
- Swoon worthy matching outfit presenting duos of both Josh Brolin & Javier Bardem and Robert Downey Jr. & Jude Law.
- The writer’s speech, this is terrifying” and “My father said to me, I would be a late bloomer” - David Seidler accepting for Original screenplay for The King's Speech.
- Original screenplay montage where the words on screen for Inception do not exactly match what Ellen Page says.
- Susanne Bier very sweet, verklempt acceptance speech for Foreign Film for In a Better World – Denmark.
- Cate Blanchett saying “That’s gross” after The Wolfman clips shown for Achievement in makeup. Then The Wolfman won for Achievement in makeup.
- “Oh my gosh, I should have gotten a haircut” - Luke Matheny upon accepting the award for Best live action short film or God of Love.
- Randy Newman’s noting that it was his 20th nomination and just 2nd win plus saying “Couldn’t they find a fifth song?”
- "The moral of the story is, listen to your mother" - Tom Hooper
- “I have a feeling my career just peaked" - Colin Firth in his lovely, humble acceptance speech for Best Actor for The King's Speech
- Anne Hathaway for making the most out of an awesome fringe dress and also looking like she was about to burst with joy when introducing Stephen Spielberg
- The fact that we can now all say: "Academy Award Winner Trent Reznor"

31st Genie Award Nominations
The 31st Genie Awards nominations were announced on Wednesday February 2, 2011 and Barney's Version leads the nominations with 11 nods including best motion picture, achievement in direction, nominations in all acting categories. Next up we have Incendies with 10 nominations and this comes hot off the heels of Incendies Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language film.
One of the things I always look forward to with the Genie nominations is getting to sink into some French Canadian titles as we only get a handful released here in Toronto each year on top of festival runs and in 2010 we did see Les amours imaginaires / Heartbeats and Les sept jours du Talion / 7 Days on big screens, but it's time to track down 10 1/2 (out on DVD Feb 15, 2011), Piché: entre ciel et terre / Piché: The Landing of a Man and Route 132.
I'm thrilled to see that many titles that made the Movie Moxie Perfect List of 2010 are nominees including The Trotsky, Trigger, Defendor, Grown Up Movie Star and The Wild Hunt. In fact I ranked The Wild Hunt and Grown Up Movie Star at #4 and #5 overall for the entire year. Looking back, 2010 was a great year for Canadian film.
One of the biggest surprizes on the list is Resident Evil: Afterlife, when I went to see it back in September 2010 the theatre insisted it was not Canadian and on IMDB it's currently listed (Feb 3, 2011) as a Germany/France/UK co-production. Resident Evil: Afterlife has 5 Genie nominations and also winner of the Golden Reel Award, which goes to the Canadian film that has earned the highest domestic box office and it's total Canadian box office in 2010 was $7,026,559.
Reviews of Genie Nominated Films: Incendies, High Life, Splice, The Trotsky, Trigger, Defendor, Grown Up Movie Star, The Wild Hunt, Year of the Carnivore and Leave Them Laughing.

83rd Academy Awards Nominations
It's time, it's time, it's time! Oscar nominations were announced at 8:30am this morning and every year I spend the morning wading through the nominations by category and compiling my traditional three this, the full nominations (below), by film with nomations detailed and a simple film list. While reading through and absorbing all the information, here are some reactions:
The King's Speech leads the way with 12 nominations, then True Grit with 10, the Inception and The Social Network with 8, The Fighter with 7, 127 Hours with 6 and Black Swan & Toy Story 3 with 5 each. The most nominations last year was Avatar & The Hurt Locker with 9, so this is a big shift.
I'm thrilled to see Incendies up for foreign language film of the year, Jacki Weaver nominated for supporting actress for Animal Kingdom, John Hawkes for supporting actor for Winter's Bone, but I'm surprized Christopher Nolan not nominated for director for Inception (although he is nominated for original screenplay and the film has 8 nominations total). As predicted, it feels odd that James Franco is one of the hosts of the show (along with Anne Hathaway) and he is up for an award for 127 Hours - that's going to be one nerve wracking night for him!
A category that I am loving this year is Achievement in sound editing: Inception, Toy Story 3, Tron: Legacy, True Grit and Unstoppable. Great set of films. Re-iterate for emphasis that that I love that Tron: Legacy was nominated for an Oscar. More awesome strangeness is that I'll be cheering for the Coen Brothers (this is the most surprizing, I'm very polar on them but loved True Grit).
The Achievement in costume design nominations and we have have great work acknowledged here with I Am Love (Antonella Cannarozzi), The King's Speech (Jenny Beavan), True Grit (Mary Zophres) and Alice in Wonderland (multiple-winner Colleen Atwood). I'm now kicking myself even more for not seeing The Tempest (Sandy Powell), it's the only film in this category I haven't seen and looks delicious.
We also have a powerhouse group of nominees in Original Score category with Hans Zimmer (Inception), A.R. Rahman (127 Hours), Alexandre Desplat (The King's Speech) nominated along with some more non-traditional nominees including Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Social Network) and John Powell (How to Train Your Dragon). I've come to really appreciate scores over the past could of years, so this is a category I always enjoy.
Animated films have come so far in the past few years, and although I'm surprized to see only 3 films in the nominations category itself (Toy Story 3, How to Train Your Dragon, The Illusionist), they have made waves in other categories as well with Toy Story 3 getting 5 nominations including best motion pictures, and How to Train Your Dragon got 2 nominations.
Films that are now bumped up my to see list are The Fighter, Toy Story 3 and Exit Through the Gift Shop, although overall I've seen the majority of the films that have been available to see. I'm on the fence on 127 Hours, still not really interested in seeing it
A short list of recommends I'd highly recommend people see The King's Speech, True Grit and Inception as we'll be seeing a lot of those during the ceremony. We'll also see a lot of The Social Network and Black Swan although I wasn't particularly fond of either of them.
I really hope we'll be able to see some of the foreign films here in Toronto, Dogtooth is on DVD today and opens at the Royal on Friday January 28, 2011 but I'd also love to see the Danish film In a Better World.
Overall it's been a really, really strong year for film!

The Social Network took home Best Motion Picture - Drama, Best Director, Score and Screenplay. Then ringing in at 2 wins each was The Kids Are All Right (Best Motion Picture & Best Actress [Annette Bening] - Comedy or Musical) and The Fighter (Best Supporting Actor [Christian Bale] and Actress [Melissa Leo]). The King's Speech did take home an award via Colin Firth for Best Actor - Drama and Black Swan rounded out the acting wins with Natalie Portman winning Best Actress - Drama.
A few surprizes of the evening including 2 wins for films had multiple nominations in the same category: The Kids Are All Right with both Annette Bening and Julianne Moore up for Best Actress and The Fighter with both Melissa Leo and Amy Adams up for Best Supporting Actress. Usually 2 noms in the same category seem to cancel each other out, but not this year - and I'm glad. Both Melissa Leo and Annette Bening gave fantastic acceptance speeches which were some of my favourite moments of the night, especially when Annette Bening first thanked her partner Julianne Moore and then also the "1962 Golden Globe Winner for Most Promising Actor: Warren Beatty." And Melissa Leo was charming when she exclaimed "All that and Kissed by Jeremy Irons!" Beautiful moments.
More great moments of the night included some really cute flustering, including Andrew Garfield stumbling during introing The Social Network and Jim Parsons thanking "his" writers for while accepting his award for Big Bang Theory. It was also great to see Diane Warren win for "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" for Burlesque, and specifically for thanking Cher for being the "eternal bad ass that you are" and fighting to keep the song in the film.
We also got a fair share of giggle as well, I particularly enjoyed Tina Fey and Steve Carrell witty presentation and I want to see Matt Damon in comedy now after his great intro for Robert De Niro's Cecil B. DeMille Award.
But the speech most Canadians will be remembering will be Paul Giamatti for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical for in Barney's Version where he spoke lovingly of Montreal, the family of Mordecai Richler, and "the Great Nation of Canada". That might just get me to see the film.
Last but not least, interesting to note that no awards when to the critic & crowd pleaser Inception. I really thought it would win for score for the very least. Some times you never can tell!
