83rd Academy Awards Winners

The biggest night in Hollywood has come and gone for another year as the awards were handed out for all 24 categories at the 83rd Academy Awards. The ceremony was hosted by the very charming Anne Hathaway and Oscar-nominee James Franco, and themes of the night were paying homage to Hollywood past, recognition for unlikely and championed films, thanking wives and inspiring words sent to daughters.

This was a very even split year with no films sweeping the awards, although the top two films were split between the high-profile awards and more tech-centric awards. I'm talking about the two films that took home 4 awards each: The King's Speech (Best Film, Director - Tom Hooper, Actor - Colin Firth and Original Screenplay) and Inception (Cinematography, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing and Visual Effects). Then we had The Social Network with Adapted Screenplay, Original Score and Editing. We also has several films take home two awards a piece with The Fighter (Supporting Actress - Melissa Leo, Supporting Actor - Christian Bale), Toy Story 3 (Song and Animated Film) and Alice in Wonderland (Costume Design & Art Direction). The fourth acting award was Best Actress which went to Natalie Portman for Black Swan.

No huge upsets of the evening, and I think I was most surprized by Tom Hooper for The King's Speech - not that I didn't like the film, but I just really expected it to go to either David Fincher or Darren Aronofsky. Perhaps the biggest surprize was True Grit not winning any awards after getting 10 nominations.

That the hard and fast information, but I think a lot of the best moments of the awards are in the speeches and unexpected moments. Here are some of my favourites:
  • Dresses: Mila Kunas' Lavender flowy low cut yet creatively covering dress, Sharon Stone's black feathery glam goodness and Nicole Kidman in a white and sparkly number.
  • Melissa Leo dropping the F-Bomb during her heartfelt acceptance speech.
  • Christian Bale saying "I'm not going to drop the f bomb like she (Melissa) did, I've done that plenty before."
  • Justin Timberlake saying he was Banksy.
  • Swoon worthy matching outfit presenting duos of both Josh Brolin & Javier Bardem and Robert Downey Jr. & Jude Law.
  • The writer’s speech, this is terrifying” and “My father said to me, I would be a late bloomer” - David Seidler accepting for Original screenplay for The King's Speech.
  • Original screenplay montage where the words on screen for Inception do not exactly match what Ellen Page says.
  • Susanne Bier very sweet, verklempt acceptance speech for Foreign Film for In a Better World – Denmark.
  • Cate Blanchett saying “That’s gross” after The Wolfman clips shown for Achievement in makeup. Then The Wolfman won for Achievement in makeup.
  • “Oh my gosh, I should have gotten a haircut” - Luke Matheny upon accepting the award for Best live action short film or God of Love.
  • Randy Newman’s noting that it was his 20th nomination and just 2nd win plus saying “Couldn’t they find a fifth song?”
  • "The moral of the story is, listen to your mother" - Tom Hooper
  • “I have a feeling my career just peaked" - Colin Firth in his lovely, humble acceptance speech for Best Actor for The King's Speech
  • Anne Hathaway for making the most out of an awesome fringe dress and also looking like she was about to burst with joy when introducing Stephen Spielberg
  • The fact that we can now all say: "Academy Award Winner Trent Reznor"
And the sweetest quote of the night goes to Christian Bale "To my little girl, who has taught me so much more than I'll ever be able to teach her". Gotta love him.

83rd Academy Awards Nominations

It's time, it's time, it's time! Oscar nominations were announced at 8:30am this morning and every year I spend the morning wading through the nominations by category and compiling my traditional three this, the full nominations (below), by film with nomations detailed and a simple film list. While reading through and absorbing all the information, here are some reactions:

The King's Speech leads the way with 12 nominations, then True Grit with 10, the Inception and The Social Network with 8, The Fighter with 7, 127 Hours with 6 and Black Swan & Toy Story 3 with 5 each. The most nominations last year was Avatar & The Hurt Locker with 9, so this is a big shift.

I'm thrilled to see Incendies up for foreign language film of the year, Jacki Weaver nominated for supporting actress for Animal Kingdom, John Hawkes for supporting actor for Winter's Bone, but I'm surprized Christopher Nolan not nominated for director for Inception (although he is nominated for original screenplay and the film has 8 nominations total). As predicted, it feels odd that James Franco is one of the hosts of the show (along with Anne Hathaway) and he is up for an award for 127 Hours - that's going to be one nerve wracking night for him!

A category that I am loving this year is Achievement in sound editing: Inception, Toy Story 3, Tron: Legacy, True Grit and Unstoppable. Great set of films. Re-iterate for emphasis that that I love that Tron: Legacy was nominated for an Oscar. More awesome strangeness is that I'll be cheering for the Coen Brothers (this is the most surprizing, I'm very polar on them but loved True Grit).

The Achievement in costume design nominations and we have have great work acknowledged here with I Am Love (Antonella Cannarozzi), The King's Speech (Jenny Beavan), True Grit (Mary Zophres) and Alice in Wonderland (multiple-winner Colleen Atwood). I'm now kicking myself even more for not seeing The Tempest (Sandy Powell), it's the only film in this category I haven't seen and looks delicious.

We also have a powerhouse group of nominees in Original Score category with Hans Zimmer (Inception), A.R. Rahman (127 Hours), Alexandre Desplat (The King's Speech) nominated along with some more non-traditional nominees including Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Social Network) and John Powell (How to Train Your Dragon). I've come to really appreciate scores over the past could of years, so this is a category I always enjoy.

Animated films have come so far in the past few years, and although I'm surprized to see only 3 films in the nominations category itself (Toy Story 3, How to Train Your Dragon, The Illusionist), they have made waves in other categories as well with Toy Story 3 getting 5 nominations including best motion pictures, and How to Train Your Dragon got 2 nominations.

Films that are now bumped up my to see list are The Fighter, Toy Story 3 and Exit Through the Gift Shop, although overall I've seen the majority of the films that have been available to see. I'm on the fence on 127 Hours, still not really interested in seeing it

A short list of recommends I'd highly recommend people see The King's Speech, True Grit and Inception as we'll be seeing a lot of those during the ceremony. We'll also see a lot of The Social Network and Black Swan although I wasn't particularly fond of either of them.
I really hope we'll be able to see some of the foreign films here in Toronto, Dogtooth is on DVD today and opens at the Royal on Friday January 28, 2011 but I'd also love to see the Danish film In a Better World.

Overall it's been a really, really strong year for film!

83rd Academy Awards Foreign Language Film Contenders

The annoucment for the sixty-five contenders for Foreign Language Films for the 83rd Academy Awards has arrived. I always look forward to this announcement, each year hoping I've heard of more films than the year before, and trumping that looking to see if I've actually seen any of the contenders (3 this year which I think is a personal best!). even or even actually *seen* some of the films. One of which is the Canadian submission Incendies, which has just slided it's Toronto release date from later this week to January 2011, which is too bad as folks will have to wait longer to see the extraordinary film.

I'm thrilled to see that Finland selection is the formidable documentary Steam of Life / Miesten vuoro (dirs: Joonas Berghall and Mika Hotakainen which I caught at Hot Docs last year and it's a very powerful film showcasing men sharing stories from their personal lives as told in saunas. Peru's contender is Undertow / Contracorriente (dir: Javier Fuentes-Leon), another powerful emotional journey, this time in a narrative centred on the hidden relationship between two men, one closeted and the other open, and the film does brilliant job exploring the complexities of visibility and choice in a setting that subtly yet openly homophobic.

Two films that have had gotten strong acclaim so far include Mexico contender Biutiful (dir: Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu) and starring Javier Barden and Portugal's submission To Die Like a Man (dir: Joao Pedro Rodrigues).

Don't feel bad if you haven't heard of many, or any, of the films listed below - very few have been release here in the T-dot. In fact, only two on the list have which are India's Peepli [Live] dir: Anusha Rizvi (release date: Aug 13, 2010) and Thailand's Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives dir: Apichatpong Weerasethakul (release date: Sept 23, 2010).

82nd Academy Awards Winners

I'll be honest. The only award I was strongly invested in tonights Oscar's was Kathryn Bigelow for director The Hurt Locker. And she won. Yes! After that, it's all cake & icing of which there was a lot. The Hurt Locker went to pick up a total of 6 wins: Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, Film Editing, Sound Editing & Sound Mixing. After that the most wins went to Avatar with Art Direction, Cinematography & Visual Effects. Two films came in at 2 wins each: Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire and Up. After that, any film that won was for one award. Overall there were very few surprizes and the show ran pretty smoothly.

I enjoyed the Best Actor and Best Actress nomination introductions from their peers, which was added to the awards last year. This always feels like a heartfelt exchange from peer to peer and gives the audience a lovely insight into the person, and also gives us more time with each the actors. I hope they keep this up. I like the nod to horror films, which was included as a sort of 'usually they go unacknowledged', but a lot of the clips were from really old films. The montage for the people we've lost was very beautiful though, James Taylor sang as they showed clips from each of the artist works along with their picture, name and what their did. Very classy. John Hughes had a separate tribute earlier in the night with clips along with reflections from people he'd worked with, which was also really well done. Overall the show ran about 3 hours and 35 min, slightly longer than noted on the tv guide but as always I wished they've just make it a bit longer and let everyone have their moment to say their acceptance speech. They might have decided to cut those short to allow more time for doing the ten best picture intros.

Slightly Bizarre Moments:
  • An Education, best picture nominee introduced by Colin Firth - would have been nice to see it introduced by a woman consider the context of the film, even though Colin Firth did a lovely job.
  • Almost all the short film directors and/or awards that went to more than 1 recipient were cut off / music'd out. They often cut to someone in the audience while doing this so it was less noticeable.
  • Some of the nominees names were said aloud, sometimes it was pre-recorded. Saw no pattern here as to why, other than sometimes noms were read really quickly.
  • During the Animated Film nominees, they had fake-y interviews with the characters in the film. The fact that The Princess & the Frog interview was with characters other than the female protagonist says everything you need to know about the film.
  • Ryan Reynolds introduced The Blind Side, Best Picture nominee as “It’s a true story, as American as Football”. Y'all know he's Canadian - right?
  • Thank you cam speeches are available online here (and are preceded by 30 second ad. 30 sec times 24 awards.. that's 12 minutes of ads if there is one in each category).

Here are a few of my favourite quotes of the night:
  • "Thank you to the 3,000 unofficial sponsors. No logos were harmed during the project" - acceptance speech for the short film Logorama
  • “They just said my name at the Oscars. I better enjoy it because it probably won’t happen again” - Tyler Perry - while introducing Film Editing nominees
  • "If you want to do it, do it. Get out there and be creative, it's not a waste of time" - Michael Giacchino, acceptance speech for Musical Score for Up
  • "We are lucky she is so young, because we have a lifetime of work to look forward too" Peter Skarsgard introducing Best Actress nominee Carey Mulligan
  • Michael Sheen re: Helen Mirren "Is it wrong to be so wildly attracted to the Queen?"
  • "The breath and depth of her heart.. is something you can never miss" Forest Whitaker introducing Sandra Bullock
  • "Did I really earn this or did I just wear you all down" - Sandra Bullock, Best Actress for The Blind Side
  • “Well, the time has come” Barbara Streisand announcing Kathryn Bigelow's win for Best Director for The Hurt Locker
  • "It's a moment of a lifetime" Kathryn Bigelow winning Best Director for The Hurt Locker
  • "They are there for us, and we are there for them" - Kathryn Bigelow, during Best Picture acceptance speech for The Hurt Locker

Poll Results: Oscar Predictions: Who Will Win Best Director?

Poll Results are in and the director that you think will win the Oscar has a whopping majority vote of 67% for Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker. I will be so happy if this happens. Next up is James Cameron for Avatar with 25%, which I'm a little surprized at that number being so high. Third spot is a tie between Jason Reitman for Up in the Air and Quentin Tarantino for Inglourious Basterds at 4% each, and 0% goes to Lee Daniels for Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire.

Last vote count is 0 for 'No Opinion' which may be the first time I've had a no opinion vote on an Oscar question! Wow.

Less than one week until the awards!

67% - Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker
25% - James Cameron for Avatar
4% - Tie: Jason Reitman for Up in the Air and Quentin Tarantino for Inglourious Basterds
0% - Lee Daniels for Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire
0% - No Opinion

Thanks for voting!

82nd Academy Awards Nominations

It's Oscar nomination day and the nominations were announced bright and early at 8:30 EST this morning, and oddly it's a year of very few big surprizes but a year of several happy surprizes.

The heavy hitters this year are The Hurt Locker and Avatar which are both up for 9 nominations, and are competing against each other in 7 of those nominations: Cinematography, Directing, Film Editing, Original Score, Best Picture, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing. The Hurt Locker is also up for Original Screenplay and a very well deserved nomination for Jeremy Renner - Performance by an actor in a leading role and Avatar's additional two nominations are for Art Direction and Visual Effects (which has to be a lock this year!).

One of the biggest changes this year to the awards is the switch from have 5 to 10 best picture nominations, which is a great way for more films to get more recognition, but if it doesn't go to either the The Hurt Locker and Avatar I'll be very surprized! When the Best Picture nominations starting with Avatar, which received zero audience reaction or response. That followed with The Blind Side being nominated with blind sided a lot of us! The remaining 8 nominations are The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, Inglourious Basterds, Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire, A Serious Man, Up and Up in the Air.

Up receiving a Best Picture nomination has been getting lots of buzz considering no film has had that honour since Beauty and the Beast (1991). Also interesting that the Animated film nominations this year rises to 5 films nominated from 3 in previous years, which means that the 2 categories only 3 nomination category this year are Make Up and Visual Effects

Speaking of Make Up, I've heard several rumblings recently on the darker films not getting make up nominations and I think there is some truth to that, this year District 9 would have been well placed to get a make up nomination although Il Divo, Star Trek and The Young Victoria are all well deserved or their nominations.

I have to re-iterated my excitement that Jeremy Renner is nominated for Performance by an actor in a leading role for The Hurt Locker, and it's no surprize to see him in the company of Jeff Bridges there for Crazy Heart but this is the one category I was really hoping to see some more gutsy over safe choices. In particular it would have be thrilling to see Sam Rockwell be nominated for Moon and Tom Hardy be nominated for Bronson.

But on a more positive note there are many well deserved nominations, including for Adapted Screenplay, In the LoopThe Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus getting 2 nominations: Art Director and Costume Design, and The Young Victoria getting 3 nominations: Art Direction, Costume Design and Makeup. In fact, I think this year the costume design category is the one with the most fierce competition as all 5 films had fantastic costumes: Bright Star, Coco before Chanel, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Nine and The Young Victoria.

Congratulations to all the nominees! Looking forward to seeing how it all turns out on March 7, 2010. Now, to plot out how to see the additional 9 films I need to see in that time!
